1947 Dac90
Hi all, have just finished the restoration of my dac90, which has been a real
pleasure to do After stripping it down i found apart from decades of muck, that it was a very original, unmolested set with all original valves. Unlike it's newer brother (dac90a) it uses larger octal valves & with it's dropper, it tends to run hot & burn a hole in it's back & this set was no exeption. After a good clean the chassis looked good but had the usual crumbling wiring to the dropper, after replacing this and a few capacitors, i slowly powered it up via my variac & was rewarded with a dial light & the valves started to glow, a few more volts & away she went Amazingly this set did no have the usualy crackley pots & switches (judging by the greasy film on the valves, this must of been used as a kitchen radio) maybe this helps? Then to turn to the case which under it's layer of dirt & grease was undamaged but very flat in appearance, so i used my method of restoring a lovely shine by using t-cut followed by silicone wax. After cleaning the speaker cloth & dial glass i reassembled the set. The last job was to repair the charred back using sections of a scrap back & araldite. (to make the set safe) I am listening to the set as i write this & it sounds great It can now take it's place in the house, to keep it's younger brother & my tv22 (next on the list!) company. That's lovely Mark. The more I see these sets, the more I like 'em and yours looks particularly shiny.
Cheers,

Well done Mark
That's a great shine you managed to get on your DAC90 case, not many 60 year old bakelite cases look as good as that ! Howard |
