This arrived today, what do I do with it?
A pal walked into the workshop today carrying a box, which contains a record player. The question I have is, what should I do with it?

Test it then sell it on eBay.

Play some records?
It looks in fairly tidy physical condition and someone obviously tried to protect the tonearm and cartridge. |

That was the model of Dansette we had when I was a very young kid.
Brings back memories, made a cheerful sound as the song goes. UL84 UY85 as I remember. Andy. |

The only instruction I received was to get rid of it.
It has valves? I sort of assumed it was a transistor model, I'll have to look and see. Is it worth any money? I don't have any knowledge of these sort of things, I suppose he'd be pleased if I gave him some cash in return!

In 2012 one fully serviced sold for £250 if I read eBay site correctly. That was a Mk3.

Re: This arrived today, what do I do with it?
Yes, this was that last vesion of the Dansette "Popular" (Mk3) from 1967. The high-output BSR cartridge alone is worth a small fortune! No need to look inside, it does have 2 valves. Yes these regularly sell for £150/£200 or more. Yours looks to be in excellent condition and will fetch more with its original box. You must test it out first though.

Re: This arrived today, what do I do with it?
Very nice and original.
Whether the two pin reversible mains connector is an original fitment is another matter - probably done so that the whole mains lead with its 13 amp plug wasn't rattling around inside when transported, possibly causing damage with the actual plug perhaps being difficult to accommodate with the lid closed. It's had some use as there's a replacement stylus pack inside, plus the fact that it's had that 2 pin connector fitted. However, the replacement stylus 'could' indicate that there wasn't any output from the high output cartridge and so they thought that the stylus might have been to blame and bought a replacement to try. It's certainly a collectors item with that original box, so worth selling to someone if you have no use for it yourself, although if selling it on it might be worth considering putting the mains lead back to original fitment. |

These sell for significant money on Ebay. But best if you do the electronic and mechanical restoration first. I have done quite a few of these as commissions.

Re: This arrived today, what do I do with it?
I'd second the recommendations.
I would say the original wouldn't have come with any sort of mains plug as sold and the dealer would fit a suitable one as these were the days of both 13A flat pin sockets and the old 5A and 15A round pin unfused sockets. It looks really clean and someone somewhere will snap it up especially if like me they have very happy memories of playing records on one. These will have great Nostalgia value. I remember Dad buying a stereo compatible cartridge for it so we could play the newer LPs, X5H? As I remember it didn't sound too shoddy, all things considered and I still have LP's from the day that we as kids hammered to death on it and they still sound good and play well. Ah those were the days, I think the pop music was better too ha ha. Actually I'm a bit jealous, if it had been given to me I'd keep it and play my old 45s on it, just for the memories and a reminder that it's the music we buy audio for. Andy, getting off the train to nostalgia land |

Thanks for your comments, I’ll open it up and see if I can’t get it back to good working condition.
