Thanks,

By the way.. The tension arm is fine now.. The knurled lock nut had worked it's way completely off and the spring was not returning the arm to a point where the micro switch was being activated.. now it is fine..

Please does anybody know how to open the VU meters to change the bulbs?? Is it really a case of wiggling them off??

I fear so...either be very careful or live with dim VUs...and try lubricating the capstan motor before you go for new bearings.

My Revox B77 has always made a very slight whining noise from new but it is only really audible in a very quiet room.

Yes I think it's related to the inductive pickup attached to the capstan motor. I'd call it a whistle. I think on later models they mounted the pickup more flexibly to reduce the whistle's intensity.
I doubt it's motor bearing noise which would probably have a rougher, less musical sound. Even so, as Ted says, important to oil the front plain bearing.

I think that whistle is part of the Revox charm!

Okay.. I'll oil the capstan bearing.. The noise is not really audible.. but in a totally silent room you can hear the machine is 'on' .. at the two lower speeds it is all but silent. .

On another note.. I managed to gently remove one of the covers off one of the VU meters..

Can't see the bulb! !!

Is the bulb behind the opaque plastic scale??.. If so I think I have to dismantle the VU panel from behind. .which is quite a bit of work as the VU meters are mounted beneath the PCBs...

It is very unlikely that Studer would have fitted a VU meter where you have to take the front off to change a bulb!
