E.A.R record player model ? - UK Vintage Radio Repair and Restoration Discussion Forum

Just bought first image pic battery player, thou listed as non working etc, cleaned battery terminals and hey presto works and has the original working acos HI-G crystal cartridge GP37 stylus. rubber wheel was solid so replaced with a BSR type and not even a crackle on the volume switch. It sounds lovely

Ive seen and owned before these E.A.R players but never seen the battery versions as image 1, The deck was used in E.M.I sonic & marconiphone electric players around 1958, so guessing mine is around 1959-59, as the speed selectors changed ( emi deck ) 1960 as in pics 2 onwards as used in the dansette diplomat, dynatron romany etc.
Theres a major design fault with pic 1 is that 10" / 12" you can put on the turntable unless you lift the pick up arm of the rest and hold it while you place the record on the turntable

Any as you can see there is battery & electric versions BUT what is the model

I think this was called the EAR "AutoBat". Glad you got yours to work OK, but just hope that isn't a Stereo LP you aare playing in the 2nd pic!

Back in the day I had the Battery operated model. Mine was Grey and had the deck with the large thumbwheel type speed change control. I don't remember the Model no., unfortunately.

It' not an AUTOBAT as the Autobat has an Automatic turntable hence the word Auto in Autobat and Bat meaning battery, yours has a manual deck and what it is called has just slipped my memory for the moment
I have just acquired an Autobat and will be submitting a post about it soon.

I also used to own an Autobat in the 60s, plus it's add-on Stereo Amplifier. They used 6 x 'D' cells (or 'U2's as they were called then), with no provision for a mains adapter, though a socket to accept one could no doubt be added. The amplifier in the Autobat is probably the same as that fitted to the manual player in this thread.

I think it's called a Packagram and there was a version with a radio fitted as well simply called a radio-packagram.

Hi edward, i dont have stereo albums all lovely mono

ive owned the Autobat radio gram recently with the monarch deck that takes like 10 singles, then saw just the gram version shortly afterwards,
the gram version has 2 knobs compared to the radiogram version

am wondering if they are a follow on / update to the playbat 4 speed etc thou id like the one as seen in the advert

hi tracey the pakagram used the single play 2 speed staar decks , as used in the dansette classic and princess, this model i got is a mystery to what its called but wont give up yet

hear is the pakagram radiogram and gram ( pic 1-2,) pic 3 autobat radiogram? mark2 version.

pic 2 listed on radio museum as autobat which is incorrect

The two "Radiogram" versions shown above were actually made by Perdio after they had acquirred EAR. They both used an exisiting Perdio AM RF section ahead of a 4 transistor amplifier. To add to the interest, by this time Perdio were also building maind record players under the CIVIC brand name.

NB: Only the later (1962/63) versions with Radios built in.

OK, I can see the difference in the cabinet design as well, but when you type a google search for packagram it shows many differences in the images section.

I've gotta say for a battery player and original crystal cartridge no tone control it must be the best I've heard, got a lovely mellow tone, for £30 a bargain
