Philips 423 record player, how to remove plastic top
My Philips 423 record player (the 'briefcase' battery player with the drop down deck) works well except the release button on the top. The catch is pulled IN by a spring - but that should be the job of the button on the top. So the button is loose and the deck always falls down.
I can't find how to pull off the black plastic top. Anyone know? Attached photo - Button / latch marked B Line round the top black bit I can't get off Clever design for the battery connections, eh? Thanks all, Ralph |

I found out how to get the top off. There are 4 screws under the sticky overs which peeled off with a knife without linking but sadly one got a bit delaminated. At least I can now get in and fix the latch.

Re: Philips 423 record player, how to remove plastic top
Thanks Nick. Photos attached - the sticky bits got a bit damaged but they stuck back OK without further glue. The peg which holds the deck in place depended on gravity, so I added a spring to push it down. Now the Open button works for the first time since I've had it. I suppose you have to choose between looking good and working well (in this case without a big rubber band round it).
This player looks great and sounds surprisingly good. Very clever design with the battery connections via springs and the recessed handle. No belts and the stepped capstan moves away from the idler wheel so it doesn't get dented. Hope this might help anyone working on a 423 |

If you deep clean the inside of the cabinet you may find the broken original plastic spring.

Good thought - but this is over the drop down deck / inside the 'open briefcase' where he deck folds up.
I think the plastic spring is old - but it works now. Thanks, Ralph |
