I’m going to put it away for a bit to finish off other things . But I will get a few bits in the mean time. Can someone tell me the value of this capacitor as I can’t find a converter on line that works ref number c 452 as I don’t have a circuit diagram. Thanks Andy

Hi Andy, it's a Mullard C280 series polyester film capacitor 0.22uF 250V 20%, the attached page from on old Mullard data book should help you. They were known as Tropical Fish capacitors, I'm afraid I don't have a manual so I don't know what C452 does.

John.

Tropical fish capacitors aren't necessarily defective even when cracked, but it won't hurt to replace.

Thank you all. I have just printed out the ref chart . Thanks John.
I see where I was going wrong .to the untrained eye it looked like the top was one red band when infact it is two bands in one Andy

I have got the tv out again after replacing a few obvious faulty items . Before firing it I thought I would disconnect the power supply from the main chassis. I put a 1 amp fuse to test it . On power up on a variac it blew the fuse but I did see the glow switch thing flash indicating a over voltage that made the fuse blow. Thé rectified is a replacement ,radio spares rec 65A and the thermistor is part number C122D . Again a replacement .
The original should be BT100A/500R . The rectifier tests ok so can I assume thé thermister is faulty.
If this is the case what’s the best one to use these days and is it also worth changing the rectifier anyway . Again what’s the best part to use
Thanyou anyone helping me Andy

I think I've seen a C122D thyristor (not thermistor) being used as a factory original replacement for the BT100A in continental sets.

Yes, it's a thyristor (silicon controlled rectifier or SCR). I think the BT106 (still available) is a suitable replacement for the BT100. Back in the day there were loads of alternatives such as the TV106, the RS one you mention and the 2N4444 in a plastic package, the latter being about the most reliable.

Just a minor point. The glow switch can become faulty in itself, firing before the correct HT has built up. Probably worth checking the HT on the glow switch in combination with a variac. J.

Thanks for the info every one.
John i checked the glow switch by checking the HT output . It should be 163 volts.i let thé voltage get up to 170 volts and it hadn’t activated. At that point the output voltage from the variac was roughly about the same.
I will get a replacement BT106 and give that a try Andy

Slow progress update.
I have replaced the thyristor. After powering up on the variac at the same time checking the voltage and a little tweek on the voltage adjustment pot all’s well from that sidérons things
I’m now on to the next problem . Not quite I thin line across the screen but about 3/4 or a inch slightly ragged. I take it the next thing is checking the output transistors.
On the plus side the sound is good.
Any more help we’ll appreciated Andy

Had a little set back .the set died altogether but traced to a faulty 220k resistor on the power supply.
Can someone comferm my readings that the BU105 is suspect as I’m getting what appears to be 136 volts on the base when I think it should be less than 1 volt.
Other transistors appear to have the correct or not far out voltages going on the circuit diagram.
I also believe the BU105 should be upgraded to a 205 . Thanks Andy

Please disregard my last post. Due to my inexperience I gave the incorrect voltage. Infact the voltage is spot on. So anymore tips please .andy

What a beautiful set! I think I've seen a similar one on Victoria Wood's As seen on tv.

Have you checked for dry joints?

I did check for dry joints .all looked pretty good.
But a bit of success just found a open circuit capacitor, that’s done the trick
It still wants a bit of work as the hight And linearity pots is at the end of their travel, slight width problem and minor screen jitter but I’m getting somewhere Andy

I think this is about as good as I’m going to get .i have had to tweek a few resistors to get the hight and linearity half reasonable. I know it’s not perfect but the way I see it the more I do the more chance of cocking things up.Twice I had components fail after half hour so it’s been a bit of a challenge to myself . I’m not happy as I have had to run the set without the glow switch as one of the legs was so badly corroded it turned to dust . I’m sure it’s impossible to find a replacement. The set has been stored in very damp conditions quite a few components fell to bits.
Thanks to everyone who helped me Andy
