Eddystone 840 or similar wanted

I'm interested in getting an oldie Valve radio, something like an Eddystone 840. Anyone near Hull selling one? Already got a Cossor Melody Maker but fancy an Eddystone.

Are you aware that these are classed as 'communication receivers'? They have extra functions/controls that are of no use with normal broadcasts. They are more complex and considerably more difficult to work on than a standard broadcast receiver. They are still quite popular with enthusiasts (I have one) and have recently overhauled it, not without some difficulties. They also use a 'Universal' power supply arrangement and don't have a mains transformer. Instead they use a dropper arrangement with a series/parallel heater chain......not for the fainthearted. Although the outer enclosure is earthed, the rest of the chassis could be live. It's essential to use an isolating transformer when working on them particularly if alignment is required.

Basically they are a bit more than just an 'oldie valve radio'.

Hi Steve, if you are just looking for a greater number of wavebands to listen to there are a few of the PYE sets that are easily obtainable and would fit the bill.
Do you want a fully restored set or are you keen to do the re-capping yourself?

Or, if it's the Eddystone style that appeals to you rather than the capabilities of the set, there are models not nearly so far removed technically from standard domestic receivers, which would usually cost less to buy as well as being less demanding to restore - such as the 670A

You already have a good selection of radios - especially the two Yaesus and the Kenwood. The Frog takes a bit of manual dexterity and a good antenna to get the best out of it. I have one that needed a bit of TLC and still needs some care to resolve SSB satisfactorily as it drifts a bit. I doubt if a valved Eddystone would perform any better - I repaired 680x's that were used in Air Traffic Control towers to monitor the NDB's back in the 70's and the spec was better than 5uV for 15dB S/N - not exactly startling - your R1000 is better at 2uV for 10dB AM and 0.5uV SSB/CW. BUT I must admit the 680x looks the part on the shelf!

I have a 840C which I have had for a long time and rotate for use with several other Eddystones etc. It is around a year since I last used it so I will be using it again quite soon. Let me know if you have any interest. I will be travelling up or down the M1/A1M in January so may be able to meet around Doncaster or Pontefract.
