Motor Start Capacitors
I have a vintage motor: A 1/6th HP Hoover motor type 411 GAR. Works off 230V or 240v.
It's a capacitor start and the value seems to be 120/145 uF. As to the rating, the first figure is missing, but I'm guessing it says 370 Volts Surge. I would not think it would be 470V. Okay, I'm assuming that a modern start capacitor rated at 280V is going to be okay. Any insights on this? Thanks. |

Re: Motor Start Capcitors
That seems a very high value for a small motor. The 1/4 hp motor on my bench pillar drill is 6uf and I've recently replaced it with a 250 vac cap and it's fine.

Re: Motor Start Capcitors
I think, not sure, a surge voltage might have been 1.25 times regular rating. If that is the case the regular rating would be 296V.

Re: Motor Start Capacitors
It does seem high, the start capacitor on the 1/4HP motor on my lathe is 40uF, it probably needs changing too as its the original TCC one. The voltage rating on it is 275Vac surge.

Re: Motor Start Capacitors
My Hoover motor was painted black. The TCC capacitor is originally black painted. Made in Mar 48. It looks original to the motor. Always a chance it's a replacement though, I guess.

Re: Motor Start Capacitors
Is this motor cap start cap run?. 120uf is normal for high starting torque this cap will normally not be rated for the full peak to peak voltage, as soon as the motor is running at about 2/3rds of its rated speed this cap is disconnected by either a centrifugal switch or an electronic timer.

Re: Motor Start Capacitors
It's just a cap start motor. Has a centrifugal switch.
