Mullard Pure Music speaker model H support stand
Hello all,
Looking for a Mullard Pure Music speaker model H support stand. One of the most beautiful speakers, in my opinion, ever made. I had a perfect example, untill yesterdayevening when one of the glass display shelves gave way ! Might be a (very) long shot, but if you don't try ! Thanks for any responds ! Regards, Han. |

As I imagined it will be a search for the holy grail, but is there a way to mend the exiting one ?
Conventional (super) glue doesn't work. The two parts stay together, but can't hold the weight of speaker (which is leaning backwards !). |

I would try an epoxy resin glue like Araldite, though this might not work so well now superglue has already been used.
You might have to resort to supporting/hanging the speaker in its display position with fishing line or similar, to prevent the whole thing toppling if your repair failed. Nick. |

You will probably need to reinforce with fibreglass or similar to overlap the join, the same method used to repair cracked/broken radio cases. Although it will be more difficult to hide the repair.

The alternative to hiding the repair is to make add a full-length bracing rib and to make it look like it's been there all along. When there is no space to hide something, hide it in full view.
Another alternative is to repair the original well enough to be able to take a set of moulds off of it which can then be used to make a much stronger replacement part out of a tougher material. David

I don't know the thickness of the Bakelite but you could possibly make a stronger joint if you drilled through the broken join and glued it with a roll pin connecting the two parts. I think you would need to drill from the outside rather than two blind holes just to get correct registration but you could fill the hole afterwards.

Re: Mullard Pure Music speaker model H support stand
Presumably the broken part comprises the second and third photos of that 'arm' thingy that you must have glued back together when you took the photo? If so, it should be quite repairable. As has been said, you need to reinforce the joint with pins that bridge the break. I'm not sure what thickness of material you have to work with, but even if it's thin, then even 'needle' sized holes drilled in each half will allow something like paperclip sections or short lengths of steel wire to be incorporated in the joint. Basically you need to introduce some 'meat' into the joint. If you drill holes that are of a greater diameter than the rods that you intend to use for reinforcement, then you will have a degree of leeway to account for drilling error and subsequent alignment problems. The glue would obviously be Araldite or similar epoxy as it would fill all those gaps and voids. The more rods you have across the break, the stronger it will be. I reckon that break is quite repairable, though not easy if you're not cut out for that kind of painstaking, accurate drilling and alignment work.

3D printing? As you have an original which could be scanned.

Ideas.
1 reinforce the broken item with a strip of metal underneath, preferably located on the same fixing screw and epoxied to the Bakelite. 2 make a replica in brass. Hacksaw and file would easily form the shape, and soft solder could help assemble some parts. Then paint to match. |

Here is the result:
Reïnforced with three stainless steel parts of some bikespokes. Has taken some time due to ill health, but I'm pleased with the result. The speaker has its stand back ! It was worth the efford ! |

That's a nice repair, looks good and it should be very strong. Pleased that 'drilling and pinning and gluing' worked for you!
