Default Cabinet for Ferguson 991T.

In the post submitted by Adrian H about the full restoration of a Ferguson 991T I stated that I can make a cabinet to house the chassis of a similar set owned by HKS.
Let's get the job started. Beginning with a sheet of plywood.

Nice! Is it going to be an exact replica of the 991T?

Hi Lloyd,
I'm not going to make an exact replica of the 991T cabinet, but rather something that resembles the original. Adrian sent me pictures of his cabinet so it is possible study the construction methods employed by the manufacturer.
The parts around the front top and side of the cabinet will be difficult to replicate so I'll attempt to make something that looks almost like the original.

The next part will be the cabinet floor. This will be constructed from a single piece of 9mm plywood instead of separate sections.

The attachment shows how the cabinet floor was constructed. Four sections plus an additional part at the rear.

Hello David,
Such a lot of work! It's very kind of you to tackle this. I was just going to build a simple box with a hole in the front for the glass and mask. Regards, John.

Hi John,
That would be too easy and as you know I don't do easy.
Why use a simple solution when a much more complication one can be used instead?

From post No. 4: "The next part will be the cabinet floor. This will be constructed from a single piece of 9mm plywood instead of separate sections."

The cabinet floor. To simplify construction it has been made from a single piece of 9mm plywood.
The next task is to make the rebates in the lower edges of the cabinet sides and also the cabinet top panel.

I guess the only reason the original was made of the separate pieces was down to cost, cheaper for them to make it out of a length rather than using a sheet of ply and cutting the middle out, as unlike us, they probably wouldn't have a use for the bit they cut out!

Lloyd

A multi section floor was considered but we're not after making an exact replica of the original 991T cabinet.
However, the underside is not complete until three more sections are made and fitted to the new floor panel.

Hi Adrian,
I'll need the height and width of the loudspeaker baffle and also the measurement between the two vertical battens attached to the side panels.
Also the width of the TV chassis.
Many thanks again for your help.

Hi David.

Are you using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut?

David check the images I sent you regarding the speaker panel there is one in there, I will add the thickness of the panel and side shot tomorrow. The width of the TV and the width of the slots and picture again will do tomorrow.
When you say the verticle battens attached to the side, is this the back of the cabinet or at the front where the plastic cover goes?

If John has any parts of the cabinet such as speaker, plastic glass etc you could probably do with them?

Adrian

Hi Adrian,
I've looked at the email pictures and the dimensions for the loudspeaker baffle are present.
We've struck up an idea for the CRT mask.
Instead of the usual plastic mask the CRT faceplate will be presented in the "push-through" manner as seen in later 14" TV sets. Like the Peto-Scott TV1422 for example.
I can have a piece of safety glass cut to size.

"Are you using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut?"
Hi Trevor,
So far the construction of the cabinet parts has been easy. Been some discussion yesterday about determining the angles of the tapered sides of the cabinet. The width of the top of the cabinet is 411mm and the base is 427mm. The side panels are 437mm high, this figure can be considered as the hypotenuse of a triangle.

I assume you want the thickness of these back pieces and the top piece that the panel would fasten to they are in fact 5/8" The two thickness of play that form the bottom I said 18mm would also have been 5/8" 0(.625") which is close to 16mm not 18 as I listed.

The width of the TV is 332 mm to the nearest, the fixing slots are 350 mm apart.
The holding down screws, I get at 63 and 313 mm from the back edge of the cabinet base.

These may change on yours depending on this panel you put in, but could also change the side controls slightly. I can not get at the depth of the TV unless i withdraw it from the cabinet.

If you want the thickness of the speaker baffle I will get that during daylight.

Adrian

The shape of things to come. The attachments show the cabinet parts have been test assembled to check the dimensions. The figures are 430mm at the base and 415mm at the top so the width is slightly greater than the figures Adrian sent me from his set. The reason for this is because the plywood is thicker than the material that was used by the manufacturer.

Assembly blocks or glue blocks or whatever those things are called will be made to create a strong structure.

That looks absolutely brilliant David. Unfortunately I don't have the mask or the protection screen but a push through presentation will be quite novel. it's a pity we are not closer so that you can match it up without so much trouble. Regards, John.

Hi John,
we haven't heard what became of the original cabinet. Was at water damaged or ravaged by woodworm?
I like to think that you put a fish tank inside it and attached a reto light fitting on the top, so that you could sell it in a trendy collectables shop! If that was the case, I'm sure you had good intentions in making sure that David had something to do in lockdown 2

Cheers
Andy
