Mazak flywheel.
Hi
I'm restoring a c.1980 autoreverse car radio cassette player, the mech still works great, however I noticed a couple of small hairline cracks along the outer edge of one of the two cast Mazak flywheels, apart from the two cracks, about 1/4" long, the flywheel looks good with no pitting or warping Do you think it's safe to install and use the radio this way or is the flywheel going to rot and shatter soon as Mazak often does? |

Re: mazak flywheel
Wrap the outside with cotton (sewing cotton is polyester now and very strong), a couple of drips of glue will hold it into place.

Re: mazak flywheel
The problem is, the cracked face is barely clearing the mounting plate so any excess glue or cotton will rub onto it and slow down the capstan.
The thing is actually still structurally sound and smooth but I'm afraid it may continue to degrade over time. |

Re: Mazak flywheel.
If it does, I'd imagine it would not run true anyway, which is a bit of a disaster in a part which is a major eliminator of wow and flutter!

Re: Mazak flywheel.
Could be fatigue or could be Zinc pest.. The latter is quite unpredictable, it could stop where it is or continue as you rightly say. Dampness often triggers it. The structure is somewhat crystalline, depending on the exact alloy used, but by the eighties the composition should have generally been better. Earlier alloys suffered badly supposedly because of included Lead (Pb)
3d printing might be an option |

Re: Mazak flywheel.
Out of curiosity, what is the make of the player?

Re: Mazak flywheel.
I suppose we are dealing with too small a component to try stop-drilling the cracks?

Re: Mazak flywheel.
Hi
Could you using a sharp pointed tool run along the cracks and then apply some thin super glue ? Cheers Pete |

Re: Mazak flywheel.
Monkey metal mazak is very light, could you turn a new one from say, nylon or polyethylene to replace it? I have found though that some flywheels have a steel core to increase the weight, probably why they develop cracks.

Re: Mazak flywheel.
Is that escutcheon upside down, or is the player that cheap and nasty?

Re: Mazak flywheel.
Making a new one is quite difficult as it has cogs for the takeup clutch gear

Re: Mazak flywheel.
My concern with that would be where the fragments end up when they break free. Personally i wouldn't use it.

That gear looks to be nylon part which I assume is a friction fit on the capstan. If that's the case then it may be possible to carefully ease it off and reuse it on an alternative flywheel/capstan unit. Regards Symon. |

Re: Mazak flywheel.
If you were feeling suitably pyromaniacal you could try building a simple charcoal-powered backyard furnace, getting it hot enough to melt down some old project boxes and sand-casting a replacement flywheel. It would still require some light machining before use, obviously; but you might get away with using just a power drill and files to finish it, as opposed to a proper metalworking lathe.
Obviously, observe all usual precautions when working with molten metals

Re: Mazak flywheel.
Firstly drizzle thin superglue into the cracks, then cut out a couple of thin paper rings, the exact size as needed, and glue one on each side using thinly spread epoxy.
