Smile Television comes to London film complete

Good afternoon,
I have found the complete "Television comes to London" film on the BBC. Unlike the one on Youtube a year or 2 back it is the complete 18 1/2 minutes long film (i.e not in 2 sections) and in better quality.

Here is the link http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02cjphq

Thanks for that, Christopher. I had this film on VHS, kindly supplied to me by Andy Emmerson of 405 Alive fame. A few years ago I transferred it to two DVD's for safety.
It's great viewing and I love the quaint 'Magic Rays' song.
An amazing feat from a different world.

The glassblower's skill and art was a wonder to behold!

Worth my time just to see that.

Another one they could add to the archive is 'This is the BBC', a 1959 documentary that shows a typical day in BBC TV and Radio. I find it fascinating. All the old faces are there from Derek Hart and Cliff Mitchelmore to Roger Moffat and Raymond Baxter. Stuck on the end is footage of the BBC 405 line colour experimental broadcasts.

Always worth another viewing, so thanks, Christopher. As always, after watching the film I could not resist taking a look at the BBC archive - and so spent another hour or more...

Pity they couldn't get the aspect ratio correct.

Many thanks for sharing this wonderful film with those of us who are relatively new to the forum and not seen this before.
I'm off to watch it again!
Kind Regards,

Right at the very end is a static shot of the tower.
I wondered what that straight line is on the right going up the tower
at an angle? It's not part of the dipoles.

Pity some English music was not chosen to back the film.

"Things to come" for example by Arthur Bliss as TV was things to come!

Yes, a nice idea. Very 'British' music. The film "Things To Come" was dated 1936 and towards the end showed the future - of 2036.

If I am lucky, in that year I will match Viewmaster's present seniority!

Ah, one more thing! If anyone wishes to know the lyrics of
'that song' here they are.

Lyrics by James Dyrenforth
Music by Kenneth Leslie-Smith

Sing along with me.

One. two, three..........

A mighty maze of mystic, magic rays
Is all about us in the blue,
And in sight and sound they trace
Living pictures out of space
To bring a new wonder to you

The busy world before you is unfurled -
Its songs, its tears and laughter, too.
One by one they play their parts
In this latest of the Arts
To bring new enchantment to you.

As by your fireside you sit,
The news will flit,
As on the silver screen.
And just for entertaining you
With something new
The stars will then be seen. So..
.
There's joy in store
The world is at your door -
It's here for everyone to view
Conjured up in sound and sight
By the magic rays of light
That bring Television to you.

Thankyou Albert. It's a charming song and I often find it pops into my head when I'm out on one of my walks. I usually find some of the lyrics have gone AWOL so I can't sing it to myself properly, but your post will hopefully help.
