R1155 Power Supply
I need to build an external power supply for a R1155. The set is mostly unmodified so the power has to go in via the Jones connectors. Advice and a circuit diagram would be much apreciated.

Re: R1155 Power Supply
Yes the important thing on these R1155s is that negative HT is NOT earthed. Not sure wether there has been a circuit on the forum before, worth searching also an excellent book from Australia gives full o/haul details.

Re: R1155 Power Supply
I agree and I'm not at all sure that I fully understand the R1155's power requirments. Negative voltage is a bit beyond my understanding. I will search for the book.

Re: R1155 Power Supply
What normally happens except on 1155 is that the High Voltage (+ and -).The - negative side would go to chassis but on these it is isolated from the chassis. In other word the negative is above earth, sure there must be a better way of putting it.Also Chas E Miller of The Radiophile does a good little cheap book (£5 or less) amongst others on the 1155 ,not sure wether it covers power supply or not.

Re: R1155 Power Supply
Hi Ray,
Did you notice the PSU I made for my R1155 here https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...ad.php?t=53805 I've also attached a picture of its innards below It's just a simple MDF box. The HT is supplied from a 240V 100mA transformer using a Si bridge rectifier, a choke and 330uf 450V capacitor takes care of smoothing. DC output is 210V. The LT is supplied from the big 6.3V 6A transformer on the right. The amplifier is a LM386 and it's powered from an unused 24V secondary, via a LM317 voltage regulator. HTH David |

Re: R1155 Power Supply
...not below?
p.s. nice job Dave on the p/s, followed the thread when you were deciding on which transformers to use, but hadn't seen the end result up till now. Rob.

Re: R1155 Power Supply
These pages from the manual give you some idea why the HT- must not be connected to the chassis in this receiver.

Ray1234,
Hope this helps. It's from a 1946 Wireless World modification sheet. Good luck, Jim |

Just click the links.
Don't do "save link as..." as the links are not direct links to the PDFs. |

Re: R1155 Power Supply
Hi Ray,
As promised here's the circuit of my PSU/amp. I reckon it's about as simply as it can be made. It's made on matrix board, inside a MDF box, so there's no worries about the HT-ve and chassis/earth arrangement of the R1155. I made the circuit around two transformers that I already had. If you use different transformers, you'll have to make some alterations. Just remember, if your R1155 has a full compliment of valves, you will need a HT supply of 100mA and a LT supply of at least 5A HTH David Edit: See post 23 for the circuit diagram |

Re: R1155 Power Supply
The 3 section HT filter in the article would be a bit OTT today. A throwback to a time when 16uF was a large value capacitor!

Re: R1155 Power Supply
The downside of this WW article was the advice to remove the DF valves to save on heater current. What happened to all those VR102's? They are now sufficiently scarce/desirable to be snapped up on Ebay at around £50 each! I suspect the audiophools...

Re: R1155 Power Supply
Has anybody ever come across any other radio which used the VR102, or its civilian equivalent, the BL63?
