Date of a Morphy Richards CA75 Iron.
Hi. I have a Morphy Richards CA75 iron which I 'inherited' when I bought my house in 1995. I gather that an approximate age for the appliance can be worked out from the serial number. The info plate has the following on it:
Model CA75 Made in England 220-240V 630-750W AC only ~ Serial No 43 Can anyone give me a guess as to the age ? Does "serial No 43" actually mean that this iron was only the 43rd such iron to me made ? Thanks. |

Re: Date of a Morphy Richards CA75 Iron.
Could be tricky. The CA75 was made for a long time, starting in the '30s. If it's really #43 its quite interesting.
However...... there were later replicas. I don't know if the rest of the detail stamped on the rating plate would be '30s vintage or not. Is it fitted with an old round pin plug? Is the lead really old and frayed with perished rubber red black green insulation?

The iron has the BEAB approval logo on it, which didn't start until 1961, so the iron must be later than that

Further, BS3456 didn't come along until 1966, so it's after that. If the mains wires are red/black/green, then it is 1966 to 1970, brown/blue/green-yellow means 1970 onwards, (or the flex has been changed, quite likely for an iron)

Re: Date of a Morphy Richards CA75 Iron.
I have one of these which I know was purchased in late 1980 or early 1981.
On the bottom is written:- morphy richards MODEL 40150 220 - 240 V ~ 845 - 1000 W COMPLIES WITH B.S 800:1977 MADE IN UK BY MORPHY RICHARDS PETERBOROUGH 26 (in large figures) could be the serial number. There is also a BEAB Kite Mark which appears to refer to BS 3488 (The 88 is indistinct)

When I was younger (about 70 years ago) we had a yellow MR iron which I'm certain had a ceramic body. Don't know what the model number was. The one in the pic above looks like a metal body. I think it was made in Foots Cray, but I may be wrong on that point.

Vidjoman. The early ceramic bodied irons were model no. PA 75. They were 1st made in 1936 and changed to the pressed steel bodied model no. CA75 in the mid 1940s. I have one which I use for iron on veneer and similar jobs, serial no 69, bought in the 1980s.
