I used this on my Harley Davidson about 15 years back, It goes on and dries JUST like old radio sets from the military etc. Harley shops sell it in their own brand can but it is just the job !

This, I imagine.

If memory serves, 'crackle black' used to be widely advertised by Finnigans, the original suppliers (manufacturers?) of Hammerite.

I was a little concerned about the final paint finish for my R1155 case. Anyway, I've done my research and plan to have a go at it in the summer. The case has been shot-blasted and has a Hammerite preparation on it. Got to wait for the advised 25 to 30 degrees C now to spray on the American paint. I hope I've chosen wisely.
