I am not sure when the requirement was dropped, it is certainly not in BS 1363:1984 and later. I suspect that it was dropped in 1967, but I cannot be sure about it as I do not have my own copy of BS 1363:1967.

Socketman - thanks for the definitive answer to my question. I suspect that Brigham has summed up the intent: not only to earth, but be seen to earth. Later standards must have dropped the requirement as custom and practice took the helm.

I'm done on this one, unless anyone has anything else to add.

Now, what was it that I wanted to know about.........
