Can you try cleaning a length with metal polish? Lead-free will clean up really shiny (it's nearly all tin). High melting point will be gray. 60/40 and 40/60 will be nearly the same, bright-ish.

The other thing is the flux! Try soldering a piece of bare copper, and without cleaning the joint at all, leave somewhere warm and very humid. If the copper shows green corrosion around the edges of the joint, then it's an aggressive flux and the solder is intended for the water or gas industry.
