Default G'Day from Oz

G'Day all, I have posted a couple of times & thought I'd better introduce myself.
Although my nickname, Oldmadham sounds like the name of a town, it is actually descriptive.

I'm old, mad, & an Amateur Radio operator!

I've been lurking for a while, & decided to sign up, as the dicussions are very interesting.
My background is in TV & Radio Broadcasting, mainly at Transmitter sites, but with a fair bit of Studio time included.
After I got a redundancy from my last TV job, I had a bunch of fairly weird short term Tech jobs till retirement--- pretty much the story for most older Techs.

Hello, and welcome.

I probably fit that description too.

Bit of a similar story - I lived in Aus. for around six years and was Ch. Eng. for a company called MTE electronics at Brisbane. Very familiar with all the stations on the mountain!

Dunno about that. One year while involved in the Tour of Mull rally, I noticed a sign saying that this land was Australian! Macquarie's mausoleum or something like that, so there may be bits of Oz scattered around firther than you might think. The bit I found is surrounded by Scotland, though. No customs post, though.

I stand corrected gentlemen. Although a quick check shows on THIS continent (or island) it's close to 2100 miles or 3380 Kilometres so lets just say, further than I wish to walk.

I think we are all mad Aussies, but the great thing is you are allowed to be mad down here. In the UK if you are mad and wealthy you are eccentric and you are off the hook, if not wealthy, you are seriously compromised and suffering extreme pathology, they admit you for treatment at her majesty's pleasure.

No issue here if it is detected you are far from normal, you just let the treating psychiatrist know that you know how to repair their Quad amplifier, then they conclude you are better off with home therapty with government support. After you have fixed the amplifier (usually just an open circuit resistor in those Quads) they will invite you around to their place for a barbecue and some beers. This is why it's great to live in Australia.

Gentlemen.

I have visited Australia several times. I like the country and its people.

I don't criticise the Australian way of life and I'd be grateful if you didn't criticise the British way of life.

No intention to offend, it was only in jest.

I recall Spike Milligan was banned from Oz, by virtue of insanity. Me, I thought he was sane... very, very sane.

As long as we can all take the mickey out of each other and out of ourselves, then the world is OK.

The trouble with banter on the internet is it can easily be taken out of context, and offence can be taken where none was intended. Banter also has a tendency to degenerate into angry personal arguments. That's why we don't generally allow it here.

We don't allow public criticism of the moderators either. One post deleted and thread closed.
