I always liked the description, I think from the book 'Radio,Television and Electrical Repairs' that the DC conditions act as 'rails' on which the signals run. Those 'rails' are there even with no signal.

Well done regarding fitting the cartridge. Clearly the Ronette was faulty.
If you are still getting reduced volume when stereo is selected then you will be only getting one channel in mono mode rather than the two combined- not terribly satisfactory but definitely progress from where you started. When it is in mono mode do you get the same volume from both speakers or is one still lower than the other as it is when stereo is selected?
