It's got the mandatory link for the missing track

Looks neat and functional. I think the important criterion will be whether it gives meaningful readings on capacitors in the low-µF range.

Always nice to see some home construction. Nicely done and thanks for sharing.

Good to see some home made stuff it will be interesting how it performs with low capacitance .

It would have been nice the see the components put on straight and with more care, I spotted a couple of potential SC's and future potential problem's like caps flopping about it the breeze, as Dave Jones would say. Why bother with a PCB if your just going to throw it together. Sorry, a bit harsh but good neat layout, short wiring usually ensures better performance.

Lastly electrical tape is horrible, ok for temporary insulation but heat shrinking tube or some other method would have been better.

Andy.

To my supprise it seems to work ok ish on low value caps,my tek 453 had an open 100pf cap,i found that with it,didnt give any meaningfull readings ,ie i stuck it across all the disc creamics on the trigger circuits and got meter deflection,on the duff cap causing the issues i had no meter movement, couldnt realy measure them, was more of a go no go indication, the test signal is about 200mv so good for testing in circuit, the tape under the meter movement is a piece of gaffa tape to stop the meter contacts shorting on the pcb,i like to keep the component leads long as if it dont work then i can re use them,it reads about 5% low over the range due to me using 1.6k resistors in place of the 1.5k ones as its all i had in my junkbox, this one seems good as the scale isnt cramped like most at low esr values.

The bodge wire was so I could mount screw connectors on the PCB, as originally the design was for wires soldered to pads. Not pretty. but works.

That's very impressive sensitivity, I'll make one

Was this the 'poptronics' In-Circuit Capacitor Tester written by Marvin Smith?

Do you have the schematic Contrary to earlier comments I thinks its a brave effort
for a one off
If it works you have won !!!

Looking a bit more carefully on the EEV Blog it must be the one in the thread 5 Transistor ESR Meter Design
It's a long thread and he describes many prototypes he tried but the one he settled on seems to be the 2nd schematic shown with the SMT layout and meter scale. He gives a file you can download called all transistor analog.asc - what's an asc and how to open it?

M3VUV51 has made a really nice job of the meter scale.

Hi
Schematic attached FYI

‘Pretty’ is nice but I’ll always go for ‘works’ every time

Correct spelling and grammar would also be ‘nice’ but would be ‘off topic’ and not the aim of these forums

A big ‘WELL DONE’ to the OP

rgds to all
John

It seems to be just an ASCII text file for feeding into the LTspice circuit simulator.

Thanks for that. The link I gave to John's post gives a jpeg about 1600×600 which is sufficient to work with

if you go for the pcb design use mr diddys one,the one by muroh is wrong on the track routing, even his corrected one is wrong.
