Default British Library - Unlock Our Sound Heritage - AV Electronics Engineer

Part Time (0.8 FTE), Fixed Term until the end of June 2022

Grade: C

Salary: 26,000 per annum pro rata

St Pancras, London

The successful applicant must have a thorough knowledge and understanding of electronic engineering to equivalent HND level or higher. They must be able to understand complex circuit design and operation, in order to troubleshoot and repair PCBs to component level. They must also have good mechanical skills and strong computer literacy. Experience of a wide range of audiovisual technologies would be an advantage.

You will be joining an exciting project to save and share audio archives. Unlocking our Sound Heritage is part of the British Library’s Save our Sounds programme, and will digitally preserve almost half a million rare and unique recordings, establish a network of audio preservation centres across the UK and encourage more people to enjoy and learn from audio archives.

As the Audiovisual Electronics Engineer, you will help ensure that the audiovisual equipment vital to the preservation of endangered media selected for the project is maintained, operating at the highest standards and available when needed.

In addition, you will support the business as usual activities of the Sound & Vision Technical Services and curatorial teams. This will include analogue and digital audio and video repair and maintenance to component level, equipping sound studios at the British Library’s Centre for Conservation according to the demands of the project, and supporting the audiovisual workstations used by specialist transfer engineers.

As one of the world’s great libraries, our duty is to preserve the nation’s intellectual memory for the future. At present we have well over 150 million items, in most known languages, with three million new items added every year. We have manuscripts, maps, newspapers, magazines, prints and drawings, music scores, and patents. We operate the world’s largest document delivery service providing millions of items a year to customers all over the world. What matters to us is that we preserve the national memory and enable knowledge to be created both now and in the future.

In return we offer a competitive salary and a number of excellent benefits. Our pension scheme is one of the most valuable benefits we offer, as our staff can become members of the Alpha Pension Scheme where the Library contributes 26.6% (this may be higher dependant on grade). Another significant benefit the Library provides is the provision of a flexible working hours scheme which could allow you to work your hours flexibly over the week and to take up to 5 days flexi leave in a 3 month period. This is on top of 25 days holiday from entry and public and privilege holidays.

For an informal discussion please contact Andrew Pearson by PM.
