Re: Manx radio??? on my Stella 239U
The IOM has its own broadcasting system and had legal commercial radio long before the UK did. The signals don't normally get much beyond the Lancashire coast. I actually had a tour of their facilities in the early 70s.
http://www.manxradio.com/ Please don't discuss current Manx broadcasting further in this thread folks, as it's OT for the forum. Paul |

I don't wish to comment on Manx Radio's program content, but I can receive it well up here in Kilmarnock, and using the Wellbrook loop its really clear. Trevor

The signal can be heard quite well on the east coast of Ireland and the north Wales coast too. Paul |

In normal circumtances, it shouldn't be heard in Sheffield. There's hills in the way - The Pennines. How high up are you?

Re: Manx radio??? on my Stella 239U
Went on my jollys to the Isle of man in 2000 (Orrisdale), and took a cheap
portable radio. Decided to tune into Manx Radio as it not a service I have heard before only to discover that Radio Ulster is on a nearby frequency. It was a case of listening to Manx Radio with Radio Ulster in background. A little investigation afterwards showed that there is 27 KHz between the two services. Not good for my cheap Chinese radio with its sub-standard filtering. Just think what it would like listening on some old crystal set or some grand old TRF set from the 1930's. |

Re: Manx radio??? on my Stella 239U
Quite a few years ago now I remember being able to pick up Manx Radio on 1368Khz (219m) the frequency they were allocated post 1979, quite loud and clear here in Chipping Norton, Oxon, in the winter evenings, but later BBC R. Lincoln was given the same frq., which marred reception. According to a 1979 edition of WRTH, stations in Poland & Italy also use(d) 1368, but I don't remember much interference from them. Radio used was one of those big Hitachi Radio/Cassette Portables. Don't remember the model no. Before then I had been able to pick up Manx Radio, and other distant MW stations at various times of the day on a Curry's Westminster(Perdio)663 portable Radio positioned close to an inside wall. Presumably the electrical wiring in the wall acted as some kind of aerial, facing more or less North West At that time Manx Radio used 232m(1294kc/s), with, I think, a directional aerial radiating a cardoid pattern, with max. power to the NE & SW.

Re: Manx radio??? on my Stella 239U
I remember being able to pick up Manx Radio regularly in about 1975/6 in Chesterfield (12 miles south of Sheffield) using a Murphy A186.
The aerial was a length of wire stretched across my loft bedroom. I don't know what frequency they were using in those days. It would probably have been Saturday mornings when I used to trawl across the MW scale trying to see what distant local stations I could hear before the TV downstairs was switched on. The resulting interference blotted out MW! Michael. |

Re: Manx radio??? on my Stella 239U
Looking at the site, the MW frequency has a power of 20kW. Quite a lot. I suppose it's possible for it to be picked up in parts of Sheffield.

Re: Manx radio??? on my Stella 239U
On a night it will be possible to hear Manx. I tried the frequency here last night,
but it is dominated by all the neighbourhood television sets ;-( |
