A Revolutionary New British Invention
"As easy as putting on a record"
I have always been curious as to how this worked in reality. To "easily ?" use the record player amplifier for playback and record would surely necessitate the use of a permanent magnet erase head, there would be no oscillator to provide the essential recording head bias to prevent distortion on playback, or am i missing something ? Someone please satisfy my curiosity. |

Re: A Revolutionary New British Invention
There is one for sale in the thread about disposing of colleagues equipment.
Looks to be in good condition, and complete too. |

Re: A Revolutionary New British Invention
Never owned one myself but I did tapepond { Correspond using tape .} with people in the 60s and the recordings weren't too bad. Usually speech and always at a speed of 3 3/4ips. Still see them for sale from time to time.
Cheap to buy if I remember. Peter W......Reelguy |

Re: A Revolutionary New British Invention
PM erase, AC bias. Surprisingly good quality - some used the preamp with other decks for field recording. The only standard speed was 7.5 (78rpm). No fast wind as such - you used the supplied handle for that - but an ingenious bit of kit nonetheless. A creation of Alec Tutchings, main reviewer for Tape Recorder throughout the sixties.

Re: A Revolutionary New British Invention
There is one of those (well, there certainly was a couple of weeks ago) at a local 'antiques' place. It was in very good condition, but missing the microphone. Perhaps I should see if it's still there...?

They were also sold over here in Oz when I was a kid. I think they were advertised in our Electronics Australia monthly. Tim
