It has been a very poor season so far Steve. FM has been bad enough, but openings to the east that favour Russian band 1 have been very thin on the ground. Most openings have been to the south west, south or south east. Still time for things to perk up but they'd better get a move on!

I had some band 1 carriers today but no video from it and it didn't last long.
The problem with this season maybe due to the prolonged settled weather over Europe and jet stream weak so no stirring of the atmosphere which is according to experts what causes Es.

So what we need is unsettled weather to stir things up but nothing in the weather forecast in the next week.
I will shout next time there is an opening.

Quite a strong quiz show on R1. As the Es patches are much higher than the troposphere,
I have never found actual weather affected it too much. Tropo ducting seems to affect
bands 2, 3, and 4/5 more, although I have experienced SpE on band 2 and 3.

Andy, by chance I turn on the receiver at 3:15 PM on Fri and also was greeted with both R1 and R2 vision and sound. I followed them for a few minutes before I had to do other things. A pleasing result after so many quiet days.

Hi Steve Friday was a good day for band 1 signals up to R3 and had Russia 1 on R1 giving good video at midnight and Yesterday (Saturday) had more good video but faded in late afternoon and nothing since then.

Are these TV DX signals strong enough to be received on an old LCD pocket TV using just its telescopic antenna ?

Yes if it covers Band 1 625 lines and correct demodulation.Though you can easy make up a 9 foot dipole out of twin mains lead etc.

There has been little activity just odd bits but not in long enough to post an alert for the past week I was out Saturday evening so may have missed an opening.

Regarding the cause of SPE here is a video called TX factor which in this episode Jim Bacon explains how the weather can have an effect on SPE go to 13:00.

A few years ago I did a write up about SpE purely from a broadcast DX er's point of view. The language is very much in a format for everyone to understand and it comes from years of monitoring SpE reception on mostly the low VHF bands from the early 1970's up to the early noughties.

Did not notice anything on Band 1 yesterday but had a very strong but short Band 2 FM opening to the south. Today I am at work so will probably miss the fun.

Hi.

I am having difficulty opening the .doc file which I understand normally opens with Word but I don't have this installed. There was a Word viewer but Microsoft dropped that recently, so I am somewhat stuck. Can anyone advice the best solution? Thanks.

Regards
Symon.
