Default Hours of fun...

The old stereo (in the vernacular) was getting a bit boring, so I had fun with some valves and veneer...

The wee face in the sun was part of the wood, I couldn't resist.

That's truely lovely, something for everyone there!

The commercial manufacturers could learn a thing or two from you.

Very nice, shows just what a bit of imagination can do.

Thank you all for the kind comments, makes welcome a change from designing hi-tech mil-spec stuff (and more fun).

The best bit is all the parts are NEW, no need to diminish the supply of parts for genuine old kit. As I type it's doing sterling service with 'Paul Temple' on radio 4 extra.

What with the sunshine PSU and sunset amplifier the missus thinks a nighttime themed tone control would fit in nicely.

Yeah, that curved fit looks like quite a bit of work!

Rather nice!

Hi Steve,
That amplifier looks gorgeous, and all built with new components as well. The little face being part of the wood, and retained is a nice touch of humour. After Col's recent veneer tour-de-force and now MM's amplifier, the woodwork gang are going great guns. I'm cursed with one of those senses of humour that led me to suggesting to the Nikon owners' group as a club song "Leap up and down, wave your Nikkors in the air". I think they've forgiven me. 40 years ago the stuff coming out of our radios was a lot less homogenised than today. It was a lot more fun.

As with the TV restorers, I think that period equipment really needs period programme material to complete the impression.

I'd very much like to see the circuit of this gem, and a run down of where the bits came from would be interesting too.

Cheers,
David

OK here goes, circuit from Duncan Amps because it was in LTSpice and saved me doing the sums. Output transformers from VVT, valves from Rapid Electronics, other bits Farnell/stock parts. The boxes where made of PCB soldered together and the mains transformer is a dual 55V toroid with voltage doubler for HT and an emprically designed LT overwind. The LT is 12.6V DC smoothed with a 47000uF cap.

Edit to circuit, the output valves are 5881 types and the cathode resistor is 560 ohms.

Thanks,

That looks quite a decent circuit. LTSpice is great for these things. I have a complete AM VHF transmitter modelled in it complete with closed-loop modulator and SMPS.

I've spotted the realistic transformer leakage flux and the phase lead capacitor in the feedback

Added to the woodwork, fun!

I make chassis by cutting flat aluminium plates and then welding them together. Life was easier when I worked at a firm where the lab had its own guillotine and folder... and the Rotex turret punch was a real luxury.

Thanks,
David

Awesome work!!!

I seldom see anything here approaching the quality of workmanship and inlay on HB projects.

I have enough problems just making a straight cut in wood.

That's a lovely looking Amplifier. It looks small, what are the dimensions?
Very well done.
That's a 3-3 and now this.....how many Amps do you have?!
I can't stop building them either. I have four or five now, I obviously only use one but none of my friends are interested in taking the others off my hands. Ah well!

Best wishes,

James.
