Well, I've had some time to look at the vcr today.

I've changed all of the electrolytic caps in the PSU and on the servo board. The problem is still there. The whole mechanism has been cleaned and lightly re-lubricated, pinch roller is absolutely fine, nothing appears to be stiff or stuck etc, the audio/CTL head is spotless, upper and lower head drum is spotless and the video heads have been cleaned, all to no effect.

Frigging thing!!

I'm stuck with the darn thing now and don't know what else it could be. I think this vcr has beaten me.

Are you sure the tape makes proper contact with the A/C head? If the control track portion of the head is missing the tape, you'll have no servo lock and sync. The head's height and azimuth can be adjusted as shown here. Play back the sine wave tone of the alignment tape and adjust the head to bring the audio output level to a maximum, then see if the servo lock problem still persists.

Hi Fivos,

I've checked to see if the tape makes good contact, and it does. The audio seems to be fine though, very clear and not muffled in any way. I'm rather apprehensive about messing with the alignment on the A/CTL head though. I've put the vcr to bed for the day, so tomorrow I'll take the top off again and triple check to confirm that the tape is actually making proper contact with the head.
Thanks very much for the suggestions.

Rich.

I wouldn't mess with the adjustments if the audio sounds good after testing with multiple tapes. Did you notice any difference in the voltage at TP4004 after replacing the caps in the servo board? Does VR4010 have any effect when you adjust it?

It's measuring the same as before. The adjustment pot speeds it up and down when turned but setting it back up to the 3.8v per the manual the speed is too fast. So I've had to set the speed with the alignment tape and my phone playing the test tone to get the speed correct.

Sorry to butt in. Have you a scope? My first hunch is CTL pulses.

Hi Tony,

You're not butting in at all. Any advice is very welcome.
Unfortunately I don't have an oscilloscope. I'm thinking CTL pulses too
I wonder if the A/CTL head is faulty(?)

Cheers

Rich.

Unlikely the ACE head is faulty on these machines as they FF/REW with the tape unlaced unlike the Sony SLC 5/6 and 7.
You really do need a scope if you are going to continue playing with vcrs

I'd love an oscilloscope, but my funds don't permit it, plus usually when one is offered on here I'm usually too far away to collect it, and people are cautious about posting them. Maybe one day the oscilloscope god's will show me some good luck haha.

Seriously you really do need a scope of some sort, panel/assembly jockeying will only get you so far.
If you are serious about restoring vcrs then you definitely need one, you would save more money rather than playing "guessing games" and gain much more fulfilment actually knowing what you are doing, this would be my number one priority before doing anything else.
Not a dig by any stretch, just a friendly word of advice.

Thanks for the advice, it's much appreciated. If you hear of a cheap scope that can be posted then please let me know

Yeah. Loss of CTL pulses is what I was thinking as well. You really need a scope to be able to troubleshoot that. Does the SV-1 board on the 5150 have the small subpanel PCB that (I believe) handles the control track, like on the earlier 5000? I have a 5550 which is almost the same machine as the 5000 and the SV-1 board on that machine is of the later type which doesn't have that sub-PCB.

Hi Fivos,

Yes, it does have the small sub panel. It's stuck on top of an IC I think.

Having had some free time today I decided to take another look at this vcr.

It seems to have corrected itself of that fault! I still have no idea what was wrong with it but perhaps being threatened with a concrete overcoat scared it

I'll keep an eye on it and see if that fault occurs again.

Thank you to all who have commented with suggestions etc. Much appreciated.
