Default Cheap PSU's and other gear.

Check this out, lots of Farnell power supply's, several HV adjustable,HP stuff, decade boxes most so far sitting at a fiver start price. I've shot myself in the foot as the Tek scope will now get more bids, ce la vie. https://auctions.ramco.uk/auctions/7316/ramco-10194

Some very tempting stuff there Andy, thanks for the heads-up. I would not trust myself to attend as the temptation would be too great!

I'm intrigued by the engineering behind the oval fans on some of the instruments pictured- a variation on the vane pump theme, perhaps? I suspect that aspect ratio error is a far more likely explanation though.

Yes- a good job that it's a bit of a hike to Skegness for me, as there are quite a few tempting goodies there.

On a more sombre note, I always find wandering round this sort of auction a bit disheartening- all that lovely cutting-edge technology that not long ago cost a fortune and some of which will now certainly go for not much more than scrap value, a symptom of the flight of technological know-how and engineering ability to low labour-cost parts of the world. Such is progress.

I've bought from them in the past, you can make a blind bid online beforehand but you have to collect or get a courier inside a specified time.

Very interesting site. Too far for me to trek these days though. It's always getting the stuff carted away that puts me off such sites. It's a major advantage of ebay that carriage is generally taken care of by the vendor.
If these auction sites had a "pet" courier that could provide a carriage quote before you bid and would sort of packaging, I think they would shift a lot more stuff at higher prices.

Surely the fans are circular - it's just the grilles which are oval

I must admit that there are a couple of lots I would find tempting if it were not for the problem of getting them from Skeggy to W. Cumbria. I think that tells me that the temptation isn't overwhelming!

I wonder if this is some of the UES&S stuff surfacing?

It makes me feel old to think I designed some of the bits in some of those boxes!

As far as I know they have an ebay shop, but suspect stuff won't be as cheap. Also AFAIK this is ex army etc stuff. No idea what happened to UES&S David, do you?

I've put a bid on a few bits and would be happy to pick up other members stuff and forward it on, but that's contingent on me winning the items.

Andy.

I have not visited their outlet for about 15 years as tbh some prices were a joke. However, just occasional absolute bargains might be found. Brand new 100mm long British made quality adjustable spanner £1, 150w thorn bc bulbs 25p. Still got3 i think? Thorn, 70W es sodium lamps, £1 each. At the other extreme,, say a used, scruffy mains drill for something like £20 + vat! Less than a fiver at a car boot.
If you look at some current regular offers, there is an MK masterseal plus 1gang 2 way switch, £15 plus £7.50 shipping plus vat on the lot. £14.99 at screwfix!
Buyer beware!
Yes, the aspect ratio is wrong browsing the list pages, but clicking on the item shows it correctly.
The current auction list does seem to cover gear from several decades.
From their website:
"Ramco is a market leading sales specialist managing the disposal of surplus assets for a range of different businesses and Government Organisations"

Wasn't it RAMCO who disposed of the Pye Museum's holdings a couple of years back after the sad demise of its founder? ISTR an ad in the back of Practical Wireless..

As an auction-site, Witham SV - http://www.mod-sales.com/ - is also worth keeping an eye on - in times-past they've disposed of pallets of Clansman radio-gear at stupidly-low [priced-by-weight] hammer-fall prices.

I think you will find it was Richard Allport bought the whole lot. That is what he told me.

Certainly, google brings a connection to Ramco, but it is related to purchases by the late Dave Hicks G8EPR from them.
Even my name appears on the Pye museum (G8EPR) website as donation of various bits of gear!
Dave was a fanatic about Pye Telecom gear! A privilege to have known him personally.

I always loved looking through the museum website and seeing my initials and engineer number on the tested stickers on the Cleartone repeaters!

I wonder if any of the gear is working? The RF power meter I'd like looks pretty battered.

"I wonder if any of the gear is working?" - I don't believe the lots are ever sold as anything other than "as seen". The auctioneers neither have the skills or time required to test the equipment being offered. It's important to take this, as well as the buyers premium and sales tax totaling 35% added to the sale price into consideration. Unless an item is not as described, or is a different item to the one pictured, then I think any refund is pretty much impossible.

Auctions like this are a lottery. I've bought a number of things from similar events and sometimes I've been lucky, with gear working fine, and other times it's turned out to have parts missing or to have been put away because of a fault. You just never know, and have to bid accordingly.

Incidentally, the HP power meter will be no use without the associated sensor heads, which I hear are fragile and hard to find.

I am rather surprised that Ramco charge VAT on the hammer price, though their terms and conditions certainly imply this. It is normal for VAT on auction items to be payable only on the premium, making a 15% premium 18% including VAT.

Having learnt this, I have lost interest in the items in this sale.

edit: If VAT is charged on the hammer price and the premium (the latter being a legal requirement, I believe), the total would be 38%, not 35%.

"the total would be 38%, not 35%." - I believe you are correct Dave! Adding almost 40% to the price bid. Of course there is then the cost of collection to be considered, making what seemed like a bargain not quite such a great deal, especially if found to be faulty! Caveat emptor, as they say. Of course don't get me wrong, there are some good deals to be had from auctions.
