Default Schaub Lorenz music centre 5005

Hi

I just found my second schaub lorenz music center, this time it's a 5005, the console model, i got just the innards as the cabinet was rotten and smashed and the turntable was missing

The tuner works perfectly, the recorder instead was bodged and was missing its stabrelais, i fitted a NOS stabrelais i had but it still plays very quietly and has an extremely loud hiss, actually the hiss is louder than the music and the hiss is there even if i lift the head off the tape, could it be a bad transistor?

Out of curiosity, do these machines have capstan or rim drive?

Ah, I just love the idea of these! The huge tape......

Would you by any chance be able to post a video of the tape player working? There are already some videos on YouTube, but yours is ideally suited to demonstrating the mechanism because it does not have a cabinet.

here's a video, as you can see it plays really quiet and with lots of hiss from the preamp

Fixed! the AC161 transistor in the playback preamp's first stage tested fine on my component analyzer but had very little gain and lots of noise in practice

fitted a replacement transistor and plays fine now

Now i have another problem: if i rewind at the beginning of the tape, the rewind motor starts too fast, jerks the tape violently and causes it to curl up in the reel, could the soft start NTC thermistor be shorted? Anyone knows its value?

By the way the new cabinet for it is nearly done
