Default Tascam Tape Issue

I recently picked a second hand Tascam 122 MKII Tape unit. The person who owned it said he hadn't been used in a long while.

It has a problem with Play/FF function. I can rewind a tape with no issue, but pressing play does nothing. When I press FF it makes a slight noise for about few seconds (like it wants to move) but also does nothing. Does anybody know what is the issue and is it something that can it be fixed? And if so, what is required/how etc?

At times, when I do press fast forward and rewind, they all work normally. But when I press play, I can hear something, like a noise that wants to start playing but after 2-3 seconds it stops. Sometimes after I have rewinded, if I press play it will actually start to play but then after about 10 seconds it just going fast forward at speed!

Hi and welcome.

Have you got any lights on next to the transport keys?

Right, that’s not good. It sounds like one of the transport gears is broken. Usually ‘C’ gear in the manual. It’s a common fault and easily rectified. The transport will have to taken out and partially stripped. The gears separated, cleaned, broken gear replaced, reassembled, lubricated and mounted back in the machine again. It’s caused by the grease used in the transport train going hard and seizing up the gears.
There is a lot of info on the internet. Just Google Tascam 122mkiii transport problems. If you’re fairly handy with screwdrivers and small mechanical repairs it’s pretty easy.
Good luck

This is a MKII, not a MKIII.

The spooling hubs are driven by idlers - two in the Mark II, I think - and the tyres on these can split. They sit just behind the metal plate through which the hubs protrude.

If the 122 is anything like the 112 that I fixed a few months ago then the mechanism is fairly easy to remove - just 4 or 5 screws if I remember correctly. You will almost certainly need to remove the mechanism in order to get at the idlers.
