Hi, I've recently picked up a Pye 1005 minus a stylus. It also came with small bag of bits - the red knob & spring + a small plate - see attached. It's a similar size to the end of the tone arm. I've fitted a stylus & the red knob & spring. It plays really well, but the cartridge just seems really loose in the arm, is this correct? I'm wondering if the small plate is part of the arm/cartridge assembly, can anyone advise? The arm won't return when it gets to the end of the record which I'm presuming is an adjustment.

Even when set up properly the cartridge may feel loose in the tone arm. Check the tracking weight, it should be 2 grams. The faulty arm return should be quite easy to fix. You need the Service Sheet for a BSR UA15 available from the Service Data link above. It is listed as BSR UA16, but is essentially the same.

Thanks for the information - I've downloaded the UA-16 service sheet.

I have found when servicing these players that all the capacitors on the two circuit boards are duff and in need of replacement.
If you don't know what youre doing, leave well alone. |

There is no adjustment. It's a clever bit of mechanics known as the trip pawl that detects the speeded up travel of the arm as it travels the play out groove at the end of the record and works on very light friction. The deck needs a full service to remove old gummed up lubrication and there's information on how this all works in one of the instructional threads at the top of this page, so have a good read.
