Default GRUNDIG TK23 not playing

Hi, we have just bought a GRUNDIG TK23, it worked perfectly the first time we used it but now the start switch doesn't move the reel around though the fast wind switches are working? We're puzzled and thinking we're doing something wrong.

Is it stuck in Pause? I think it's the second button from the left

If the Pause (Temp Stop) key was not pressed down, then press it down and press again to release it.

If still no Play drive, see if the right hand side Take Up spool table rotates when the Start Key is pressed when the tape is not threaded /loaded.

If no sign of the Take Up spool table moving when Start is selected, then you will need to remove the top panel by removing the 4 securing screws, remove the track change control knob and press the 3 keys on the bottom left to release the front left corner of the top panel, then press down the 3 keys on bottom right to release the front right corner, the top panel can then be lifted off.

With the top panel removed, there will be finger access to the 240 volts mains connections on the On/Off switch on the volume control, so be very careful.

Unlikely because it was previoulsy working, but check to see if the rubber drive belt from the flywheel to the right hand side Take Up spool table is not broken.

If not broken then it may be too loose and the belt then could slip and not drive the Take Up spool table. Also check that the 2 brakes are being removed from the Supply and Take Up spool tables when Start is selected.

If the Take Up spool table was not being driven when Start is pressed down, the tape itself should still be driven forward by the Capstan shaft/Pinch Roller.
