Default Kirk LST No. 10 (Digitel 2000) Very quiet ring.

Hi all, I recently acquired this Kirk pushbutton phone here in NZ, when I call it, sometimes it rings loud and clear, but most often the ring is very muffled and crackly.
Would anyone have any ideas what might be the cause of this? I'm guessing it could be a capacitor giving up, but I was wondering if someone might have some experience with the same issue that could steer me in the right direction.
