You do get occasional gems turning up on Freecycle/Freegle lists. As you say, they usually go very quickly, though you do have a better chance with anything listed as not working. These items usually have trivial faults so are well worth grabbing.

Some people have no idea what such things are worth and just view them as junk. Others have so much money that they can't be bothered selling unwanted items (quite likely in Hampstead).
