'Sounds of the 20th. Century' 30th. June
I've just caught up with last week's episode of this Radio 2 series via the I-player, and one item mentioned in the program intrigues me. It seems
that in 1963 there was an attempt by 'The South Coast Broadcasting Co.' based at Worthing, West Sussex, to persuade the Government of the day to end the BBC Radio monopoly, although, from the short excerpt included in the program-an interview with, I think, the Chief Constable of West Sussex, SCBC would have been like the then Home Service with commercials. Googling them turns up nothing, and I'd never heard of this before. The SCBC apparently were based in an 18th. century castle, but did they actually broadcast or was it a closed circuit experiment? Sounds of the 20th. century, 1963 will still be on the I-player until 11PM BST if anyone would like to check it out! |

Hi "Livewire"...
As I live not far from Worthing, this interested me. I have not heard of "'The South Coast Broadcasting Co." either. But they are mentioned on the Internet: http://bizzy.co.uk/uk/00711883/south...asting-co-the- The 18th Century "Castle" in question is a big house called "Castle Goring" which is just off the A27 on the west side of Worthing. Other than this, I know nothing more! |
