HMV 2011 with BSR TC8H cartridge. - UK Vintage Radio Repair and Restoration Discussion Forum

Hi, I have a BSR UA8. After reading threads on here I am going to fit the SC11M cartridge in it. What I wanted to know is if anybody has a way of keeping the TC8 turnover bit to keep it looking the same. Maybe glue or something, any ideas?

The other thing. Do I wire the SC11M in series or parallel?

There is a difference of about 750 mV in output level between those carts. Unless you use a preamp an SC11 won't be loud enough. Very common scenario with these old players. Sadly there's a dearth of high output crystal/ceramic carts. An x5H would be a good choice but when they turn up they're pricey. The preamp option is probably cheaper, then you can use any ceramic.

Does that mean I shouldn't bother changing it then Ben. It's on a push pull amp. what cartridge can I use for stereo records, or is it only the x5h. I thought the sc11m would be OK

If the player (make? model?) came to you with a TC8H then you'll need to fit something comparable in output, basically. As things stand the only drop-in replacement would be the x5H (mono, but stereo compatible). But do let us know what player this is.

In these situations I usually cover the hole at the end of the arm with a piece of similar coloured insulation tape or similar. Attempts to glue in the new cart to the existing turnover mounting may give you problems with tracking angle.

I put a record player up on here that needed work but no takers as it had a bar monarch deck thought I would just check it has a x3h in it would that be any good see photo

That X3H would be a good replacement and is stereo compatible.

Thank I'm now glad I didn't get any takers for the record player�� I may just swap the cartridges over so the tc8 goes on the monarch deck

I'm not quite sure about where this thread is going? What type of record player does this relate to? If it's, as you say, to drive a push-pull amp, then the extremely rare BSR TC8H or a BSR X5H, will not be needed. You need a medium output stereo-compatible cartridge and still (just) available.

How about telling us what the player is? Many makes and models had BSR decks.

Oh sorry I thought I did put it in post it's a hmv 2011 which I believe is a push pull amp. I haven't taken the old cartridge out because I'm not sure what records to play on it. My first thought was about putting a plate at the end of arm so I could maybe attach the flip bit to it so it looks original. But then it got on to changing cartridge then without thinking I put H instead of m

If you do a search on here there's a whole description with pictures I believe of a modification that someone did with fixing a more modern cartridge into an old BSR TC8 bracket, probably exactly what you want to do. I can't remember who it was or when it was, but it was perhaps within the last several years. I haven't done a 'search' myself, but I'm sure you can use the 'search' button at the top of the page to find it. Someone else may even remember the thread and point it out, or even the original poster may read this thread and link to it.

The cartridge specified in the service sheet for this player is a TC8M. The audio has a triode pre-amp followed by a triode phase splitter followed by two pentodes in push-pull.

I'm sorry for being a nuisance I have wired the new sc11m connected the cables as in photo, it all works OK but trying to find out how much loss in volume it should be. The volume knob rotates 3/4 of a turn from 0 to full. If I play the radio at about 1/4 turn to get the same volume on a record it's about 1/2 a turn.

That's just about right. The new cartridge will not have as much output as the original.
