The flameport site is interesting but the most useful page is here, under "Significant Flaws" https://www.flameport.com/electric_m...elcb/index.cs4.

The key point that is made is, "Unlike a modern current operated RCD, these devices do not provide any protection against a person coming into contact with a live conductor. Faults between line and an earthed object such as a person will not cause any voltage to appear across the coil, and it will not trip".

One of these units was fitted in my house when I first moved in. I, and many others who saw it, including a chap from the local electricity supply company, mistook it for an RCD. Mistake!

Also multiple earth path faults would prevent the threshold voltage to be reached./achieved, but in their day, there wasn't anything else, and I think most static caravans had them fitted.

We (I was just a kid) had one in our new 1961 house.

These have not been fitted since the introduction of the 15th Edition of the Wiring Regulations, introduced in 1981.

Just a nice electrical curiosity now!

If anyone is considering owning this unique (possibly) piece of nostalgia, then I'm thinking postage will be between 2-3, with Hermes.
