Panasonic SG3090L music centre
Hi all
Something has been feasting on my Panasonic SG3090L. The unit has been in the garage for about three years all wrapped up and in a box. I got it out yesterday ready for moving house, and thought I might power it up just to make sure its still OK. Well it powered up OK [radio works /cassette works] but the turntable would not budge, and there was nothing when touching the cartridge. When I opened it up [no mean feat] I found lots of wires with missing insulation [all chewed off] Its a miracle none of them were touching each other or anything else for that matter. Most of the actual wires are intact, just missing the insulation [I can replace them] but there are one or two that are completely chewed right through, and I have no idea where they connect to. The damage seems to be confined to the area under the turntable, the rest of the unit has been left alone. If we have any Panasonic experts out there your help would be most appreciated. Forgot to mention that the wires as they appear from the underneath of the arm have been completely chewed off as well. |

Re: Panasonic music centre
Those cuts in picture 4 look far too 'clean' to be the work of a rodent. Are you sure someone hasn't had the deck out and just put it back before finishing the work?
If rodents have been in, you will certainly find droppings.

Re: Panasonic music centre
Pic 2 classic nibbling but the other cuts look like a mouse with a pair of cutters in it's pockets, strange. How did the vandel get in, is there a whiff of eau de micturation?
Saw this yesterday - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBSYCaosk_k - see at about 10:50; he says there were enough nuts and seeds to get a Xmas platter, a few nibbles for the guests : ) Andy.

Re: Panasonic music centre
I vacuumed up all the tell tale droppings /dries grass /leaves ect before taking the photos .I do see what you mean about the clean cut wires under the deck they are extremely thin and would be no match for a good set of teeth. There is also a distinct odour [That tel tale pet shop smell] I cant imagine how it got in unless it squeezed in through the opening where the speakers plug in [the back panel is not a snug fit

Re: Panasonic music centre
I've seen something like that insulation phenomenon before - on my 15-20 year-old Panasonic wireless headphone set (still going strong) on which the ordinary-looking plastic insulation on the audio input lead just progressively crumbled away to dust after a number of years. I've not seen anything like it before or since, and I just put it down to a faulty insulation formulation. But I agree with others that those flex cuts just look too clean for anything other than a rodent armed with side-cutters...!

Mice can get through the hole in a drink can!
The cable cuts also seem to be to precise for any creature, unless it has the mouth the size of a hand!! |

Re: Panasonic music centre
spent some time today [where possible ]undoing one end of the chewed wires and slipping heat shrink onto them then reconnecting.Where bits were missing i have replaced wires with the same colour.I have reconnected the tuning scale pointer back up but it will not light [its usually on all the time ]i think it needs replacement .I get 12 volts across its two connections .The two tuning meters at the far right of the unit are working but only one lights up .As they both connect to the same place i am assuming the bulb has gone .This one has 3 volts feeding it .Is it possible to get new bulbs [They are small with two wires coming from them ].I have not touched the record deck yet but i have managed to get the cassette deck working well after lots of cleaning .I had forgotten how good this unit can sound with some half decent speakers connected to it .One of the Vu meters is not lighting so thats three bulbs altogether.I will have a go at the turntable one evening this week .I need to replace the thin wires inside the arm as the have also been chewed off

Re: Panasonic music centre
I used to use the grain of wheat bulbs for model railways to replace the lights. But you can now use LED types now as they will last longer and are cheaper.

Re: Panasonic music centre
Hi all .Well i spent most of [WET] yesterday fitting a new drive cord and replacing blown bulbs with LED's.All the chewed wire has either been replaced or covered with shrink wrap .controls have been cleaned and are now crackle free .This afternoon i have repaired all of the damaged cables on the underside of the record player including replacing the extremely thin wires in the arm [that job involves plenty of swearing to do it properly]Once done i plugged it back into the main unit and it worked perfectly .The cassette deck works well [just gave it a good clean while the cabinet was off ]I just have one more problem to sort and its done .As you can see there is an orange wire next to the metal box marked FM try as i might i cannot work out where the other end should be .I have spent hours with a magnifying glass looking for any tell tale signs but cant see anything .I have looked at the service sheet but cant spot anything there either .The thin wires coming from the ferrite rod have all been eaten but the unit still picks up some stations .FM works well [not to bothered about AM

Re: Panasonic music centre
Looking at the pictures, that Orange wire comes from a point marked 'TP1' (Test Point 1). The other (insulated) end is not connected to anything. It's provided to allow the attachment of a test probe from either a multimeter or oscilloscope during repair or realignment.

Re: Panasonic music centre
Nearly there with this unit just a couple of problems with the cassette deck .I played a pre recorded tape and it worked perfectly so i decided to record something from the radio as soon as i pressed the record lever there was a loud whine from the speakers .It turned out to be the big multi switch that is activated when the record button is pressed .A good squirt of switch cleaner and a few movements later the fault is cured .The other problem is the belts or the belt [the other one only drives the tape counter ]while its not perished its very slack [when play is pressed the unit takes a few seconds to get up to speed ]Just wondering if its possible to get a replacement ?.Another thing puzzling me is the black wheel on the end of the tape counter last photo [seems to be made out of the same material as the fer rite rod ]can anyone tell me what its for

Re: Panasonic music centre
Does it trigger a sensor to stop the mechanism if there is a tape jam and the counter stops turning.
If it is the belt for the tape counter is quite important.

Re: Panasonic music centre
