Member's Posts Count
My total post count earlier this morning stood at 980 give or take one or two. I've just noticed it is now showing as 852.
What has happened to the missing 130 or so I should have? Regards |

Re: Member's Posts Count
Reduction in post counts are a result of the first part of this exercise:

Re: Member's Posts Count
Thanks for that Neil, I had assumed it wasn't confined just to me. Presumably this is an unforeseen effect of Paul's attempt to reduce the load on the server earlier today?

Re: Member's Posts Count
Thanks Dave. My post above crossed with your explanation.
I was about another 20 posts from turning 'Octode', looks like I'll be staying 'Heptode' a good while longer now then! Regards Last edited by Robert Darwent; 23rd May 2012 at 11:24 pm. |

Re: Member's Posts Count
When threads were deleted for any reason, they were usually moved to a private area of the forum not accessible to members. One of the reasons for doing this was to maintain members' post counts. We are now clearing out this private area for performance reasons, and this is likely to reduce the post count of most longstanding members.

Re: Member's Posts Count
I understand and fully accept the performance improvement reasons behind clearing out the 'private' area.
But surely when a thread is deleted the members who took part in that thread should not have their total post count reduced as well. It almost seems like a penalty for taking the time to actively participate in this forum and hardly an incentive to continue to post further. Regards |

Re: Member's Posts Count
At the end of the Day Robert it's only a number, your reputation by name far exceeds any arbitrary number.
The greater concern should be what was lost, one would imagine just flotsam and not quality knowledge type threads. Chris p.s. I lost 200 odd as well Last edited by oldticktock; 24th May 2012 at 7:07 am. |

Re: Member's Posts Count
I've lost about 3000. Thank goodness. I was getting dangerously close to 10000.
What worries me about this process is throwing out the wheat with the chaff. At one level even old sales/wants threads could be of interest to researchers in the future. There is no need to have these as part of the main database or even in a hidden area but I don't know enough about these systems to understand what mght be done with them. |

If that happens to me I might once again fit in an octal valveholder without needing a top cap!

Re: Member's Posts Count
The consensus of opinion seems to be that the post count is only a number. Well could I suggest if that is the case and that since the thread deletion process the individual post counts are no longer accurate or meaningful that we have them removed from sight completely along with our heptode/octode/etc status and we all become just 'members'?
I'm willing to bet that not many will agree with my suggestion being implemented because the post count 'is' more than a number to many. Regards Last edited by Robert Darwent; 24th May 2012 at 1:21 pm. |

Re: Member's Posts Count
I understand what you're saying, Robert, but the reduction has affected the majority of us in an approximately equal way, so although your absolute number of posts has gone down, your post count still indicates that you're a prolific poster.
This is nothing new - I'm sure we had the same discussion several years ago. Nick. |

Re: Member's Posts Count
The point I was trying to impress was that the individual post counts are now meaningless. They no longer reflect the true participation of any member on the forum. So why continue with them? What value are they now to anyone, they really have become just an arbitrary number. Getting rid of them completely would free up more server resources which I believe was the object of the exercise.

Re: Member's Posts Count
The post count is a useful indication of whether someone is a new member or has been here for some time and is a regular poster. The exact figure doesn't really matter.

Re: Member's Posts Count
The post count is an accurate indication of how many posts a member has on the system, not how many they've ever made. If posts are deleted the count will go down. There is something to be said for both an historic post count and a stored post count, but the stored post count is what we've got and there's no point in grumbling about it. It's not going to change.

Re: Member's Posts Count
I do understand your grievance Robert.
Since it's mostly "old" posts being removed, older members are bound to have a greater reduction in post counts. Really though, the number is quite arbitrary, I know some people cherish it like an ebay feedback rating, but that is quite different. There have been members (most of whom are no longer members) who some how racked up 1000 posts in a few months, but didn't really "add" anything to the forum. I'd gladly give you a hundred of my own if I could... Cheers, Rob.

Re: Member's Posts Count
The pentode, hexode, heptode thing was just a bit of fun when the forum started. Once you reach 'Dekatron' (3000 posts) you can't go any higher even though the post count changes. The post counts change from time to time and have done since the forum started so none of them are 'accurate' anyway. Actually if I've still got over 3000 posts on the forum after a clearout, maybe I spend too much time on here and should find other things to do.....
Rich.
