There is an amusing picture of the Roberts partners with their wives (who were sisters) in a field listening to a suitcase-type portable radio with an Aladdin's Lamp fret on page 192 of "Setmakers" The caption suggests that the date is about 1933, the year after they set up their business.

Many thanks to all those who responded to my original post. It does look like Schiffer was generally right that production of portalble radios became popular in the UK prior to the 1938- 1942 portable craze in the US.

Certainly portable were available from 1928 here .mainly the suitcase type with speaker in the lid and quite large. I would say the became more practical after 1938.
I just came back with a nice 38 Vidor yesterday from the BVWS Garden party in London. It is quite small ,about 12 " By 10" by 7" |
