Default Golborne (Manchester) Swapmeet 12th November

The Golborne BVWS swapmeet is Sunday 12th November, just west of Manchester.

http://www.bvws.org.uk/events/locations.php

Doors open at 10 (stall holders 9.00). The usual variety of stalls selling Radio, Television, Audio, Communications receivers, Test gear, Valves, Components, Spares, etc. Ample free parking, hot and cold refreshments available. The BVWS stall will be there selling the usual range of capacitors, Deoxit, etc., so you can stock up the workshop ready for the dark winters night repairs! If you have one or two items you'd like to sell, the 'Bring and Buy' stall is where you can sell your items at 10% commission to the BVW&TV Museum.

STOP PRESS: Due to the high amount of collections coming in that we're being asked to dispose of, the BVWS stall will have even more stuff than usual and everything must go, as the van has to pick up two more collections on the way home!

It's a members only event but if you're not a member, why not come along for a sample visit? You'll be made most welcome and you can even take the plunge and join on the day if you like what you see! Credit/debit card payments taken at the BVWS stall.

See you there....

I’ll be at the Golborne meet on November 12th to give a talk. At last Novembers talk on an Introduction to Valves I said this year’s talk will be on an Introduction to Semiconductors. However I’ve been very busy this last year with various domestic matters and as a result the talk is not quite finalised. I’ve built the demo unit but have not had the time to finalise the write up. Therefore I will be giving a different talk which I’ve titled “Tales of the Unexpected” based on my experiences of design failures and fault finding during my working life and shows some of the pitfalls of designing for military, commercial and consumer electronics along with one or two amusing incidents. It will also show that you should never stop learning as experience gained in one area can be useful in another.

Unlike previous talks there will be no notes this time as these do take a considerable amount of time to produce and proof read.

As a bonus, though, I’ll give the semiconductor talk at the next two Golborne meetings with part 1 in April devoted to diodes and rectifiers and part two in November devoted to Transistors and ICs.

As usual the talks will be in the side room and will start around 11:30.

I'll be there!

Looking forward to Keith's talk, and hopefully will be going home with a transistor radio instead of another valved woodie.

Of course, we'll all have our badges on, won't we!

Hi everybody

As a relative newbie to the UK vintage radio scene, and not a member of BVWS, I take it it's OK to just turn up and view as long as it's also a visit with the possibility/probability of joining.

Thanks.
Rob.

I believe that is the case and you'll be made most welcome, even more so if you join BVWS.

As Keith says, you'll be most welcome!

Come and say hello to us at the BVWS table, you can't miss us, we'll have a large amount of stuff on the stage and on the tables in the corner.

If you have any questions about the BVWS and the benefits of membership, we'll be only too happy to have a chat!

See you there!

I was a bit surprised that Voltaire [great name] was unsure about attending. I thought you'd already comprehensively covered this recurring issue Greg [in the thread started by Boater Sam on the 11th of October "BVWS Swap Meet 12th November Transport] but it doesn't seem to be on here anymore, although it can be found through "Search This Website" eventually. Perhaps they can be combined? Maybe a sticky would be usefull as the same questions get asked over and over every time!

Ironically, after commenting myself on the 13th October I'm detained in Sussex due to my wife having had a minor but restricting operation Hope it all goes well.

Dave

Thanks everybody, I'm really looking forward to it.

Will take some cash and cards and hope to pick up some test gear and possibly something to renew my repair skills with.
I just wish I hadn't thrown so much away decades ago, only to now be picking it all up again. The outside world changes but our wiring stays the same.

See you there.

Although the BVWS take card payments it is unlikely that any of the stallholders will, so definitely take some cash along with your cards. I don't know whether there are any cash machines nearby, hopefully someone else can advise.

Have a great day, your first taster of the BVWS!

Well there is one particular item I would like to find...

The old two pin aerial/earth plug as used on many continental radios. Two small flat pins at right angles to one another, similar in size to the far more common 300 ohm VHF plug.

Actually whilst I am dreaming.... would not mind Sony 3 and 4 pin mains leads.

A Faras battery valve bicycle radio by Pawerphon would really be the icing on the cake!

See you Sunday.

Another great meeting! thanks for all the hard work put in by the organisers and stallholders, and Keith for the entertaining talk.
