Default Dansette Oxford Radio - DTR38

Hello

I have recently acquired a Dansette Radio model DTR38. it a very basic LW/MW set, but they performed (signalwise) very well.

This is a radio I had when I was very young (back in 1975!), so when I saw it on a auction site, I had to get it.

Its generally in good cosmetic condition, but the Audio is very distorted. I remember this being a slight problem when they were new in 1975. This one is a lot worse though. it sounds like insufficient bias on the output Transistors.

I recall in the 70s (when I was 12), that by increasing the battery voltage to 9v instead of the 6v, the distortion went away.

Does anyone have the circuit of this Radio at all? it may respond to capacitor replacement of course.

Many Thanks

Paul

This seems to be rather obscure. Only Dansette Oxford easily found is a record player.

Any chance of a picture?

Whats the transistor lineup?

This Dansette was made after the brand was acquired by Rank Bush Murphy, around 1970.

The D in the model number is for Dansette branded products and the TR is standard Bush radio nomenclature for an AM only TRansistor radio.

It was made in India, by an Indian associate company of Rank Bush Murphy (as were several Bush and Murphy branded radios of the same era).

Yes thats seems correct. That is the one on the auction site!
Not a common radio by anymeans. I will check on the Transistor lineup, but I recall they were BF194/195 Types in the RF/IF. Not sure yet what is used in the Audio stage until I open it up again. There is definitely a audio transformer in there along with a 15 Ohm speaker. Nice large ferrite rod in use too.
Thanks Paul

Here is a picture of the inside. I am presuming the Transistors are AC127/128 Type. They are encased in a heatsink so cannot see yet what the numbers actually are.

Yes, it's quite likely they are a Germanium complementary pair.

I see there are (probably made in India) brown Hunts Moldseal lookalike paper capacitors, some TCC lookalike axial lead electrolytics, plus some Mullard/Philips Lockfit Silicon transistors on the PCB.

There might be an electrically identical, but cosmetically different Bush or Murphy model - which might make getting a service manual or circuit diagram easier.

With just the one transformer visible, I would expect a totem pole output rather than complementary. If they're Ge, then probably PNP since they would be cheaper.

Found this Dansette DTR38 radio in the shop.
The carrying handle has broken off.
Can't remember if there was a Bush or Murphy badged version.

Externally it looks similar to the Dansette Windsor DTR15. There is one of these on eBay at the moment. I can not find a circuit diagram for this model either though.

I can't remember Rank-Bush-Murphy ever issuing one.
