Default Murphy A70C FOC

I have been offered the above radio from a friend I am guessing it is complete, a family radio that has been in the loft for a number of years. It is of no interest to me. To big to post but if anyone was interested I would be willing to drop of locally up to an 1 hrs drive max, if no interest locally would break it up for spares if wanted. Otherwise it could end up at the tip, I haven't accepted the offer yet as I thought I would check to see if there was any interest. Pics added of actual radio, dont tell you a lot but only ones I have.

This is an R D Russell design from 1939. Rare and collectable.

Hi Ian

My Mother-in-Law has a Murphy A70C in her garage that I've looked at a couple of times but have always thought it was beyond repair.

So I'll be following any restoration with interest - good luck ...!

The table version seems quite common but the console isn't, I hope it finds a good home. It's bound to sound really good when serviced.

Please don't consider breaking up or dumping.... The Consul version, (as mentioned above), is much rarer than the table model.
Both the cabinet and chassis appear complete, and definitely would be restorable.

I would respectfully suggest not pugging it into the mains until it has been restored, as this can cause expensive damage.

Thanks for comments and advice. The only reason I considered accepting the radio was to stop it possibly being binned. I have now accepted the offer from my friend, and I am mulling over what best to do. When I receive the radio I will post more pictures, and definitely will not attempt to power it up.

Ian - good to hear that you have accepted the offer of the radio.

The restoration will be a major Project but I've no doubt that you have the necessary skills, knowledge and expertise for the job! And you have this Forum for support if required.

Looking forward to following your progress with great interest.

From the great B+W Illustrated " Murphy Radio Design 1930-1950" available on-line, I notice that the press button tuning selector [just above the speaker panel] was an extra 35/- [it's not "selected" in either of these two examples though]. DC/AC 5/- , Remote Control [AC only] £3 10s 0d extra.

Appreciate your confidence in me Alastair, but I am still quite a novice. Still waiting to receive radio, and are 50/50 on whether to keep or pass radio on as its not really my style.
