Default Creating an adapter from 5-Pin DIN to 3.5mm jack

Hi folks,

Just got myself a pair of vintage 70's Erres (Philips) headphones, which work great with my vintage record player, but I really want to use them with my guitar amp, meaning I need to find a way to convert the 5-Pin DIN "Domino" connector to 3.5mm. I know how to handle a soldering iron, but I'm not sure how to wire the DIN connector to 3.5mm, nor am I sure if I can even directly connect them at all without an amp in the circuit. Can anyone help me figure this out?

Thanks in advance,

Guitarman0512

Is this the sort of thing you need? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/203786618176

Similar adaptors are probably available from the NL eBay site.

When you say "domino" five-pin, do you actually mean with the pins arranged like the number five on a set of dominoes, rather than the semi-circle as shown in Paul's link?

The photo attachment at Post 1 of this linked Thread shows an example of a chassis mounted 5 pin Domino connector, which as Dave above says is different from a standard 180 degrees 5 pin DIN.

Ah, right.

I do remember Philips and Sennheiser using those on headphones in the 70s.

Also Braun on their R2Rs.

If you are not worried about it losing its authenticy, you could remove the Domino plug connector off the headphones cable and replace it with a 3.5mm stereo audio jack plug, most likely will be a 2 core screened cable so only 3 connections.

Of course it then would not work with your vintage record player.

David

Edit update - This assumes the guitar connection you reference is a headphones stereo output and that the output impedance of the guitar amp is similar to the headphones impedance.

I've done several adaptors like this with a foot or so of cable for interconnecting old headphones and various equipment with DIN, 1/4", 3.5mm plugs etc.

I've attached some documents with common pin-outs. If you have a guitar amplifier with a headphone jack, then wire up the 3.5mm plug as normal. I assume it's mono, being guitar, so you'll need to tie left and right together. Probably with a wire link at the DIN socket end rather than the 3.5mm plug as there'll be a little more room.

Thanks everyone! I think I can figure something out now. I'm not quite sure about the impedance of my amp, nor the headphones, but I'll just order the parts and find out myself I guess.

What a fantastic document, might be worth adding that to the 'reviving your old tape recorder' thread for future reference.

My mistake, it was the 'transferring old tapes to PC' thread that I meant, it has information about DIN connections in it. https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...d.php?t=103289

Headphones impedance matching is not overly crucial.

If you have a DMM you could measure the DC resistance of the headphones, the value of which will be similar to the AC impedance, i.e. if you measure 6 Ohms then the headphones nominal impedance will probably be 8 Ohms.

If you can find a spec sheet for the guitar amp then that should state the recommended headphones impedance.
