I do have quite a few bits of junk which I keep just because they are interesting or, at least to me, attractive. On my bench I have a 4CX10000d; a 10kW transmitting valve. It does look quite impressive.

There's an A700 just to my left.

Can't remember the last time it was turned on and it's full of rifa caps.

I'm coming to the conclusion that the B&K stuff needs to go once the valves are extracted.

Might keep the Ling, after all it's got a built in Wein Bridge oscillator & is capable of 300VA continuous.

If you have any of the old valve versions of B&K equipment, be aware that they are now quite sought after by avant-garde musicians and sound artists. Better to dispose of them complete to people who will actually use them.
An acquaintance of mine specialises in restoring them, along with classic electronic keyboard instruments.

I'm sure the valved B & K gear is well worth keeping and using. Manuals are often more easily available for the older stuff, access for servicing is far better and it's largely simple enough to work out the issues for yourself if in fact there isn't any manual available.

The late hi fi designer Tim de Paravicini had an old valved B&K measuring amp on his bench (one of the standy-up ones with the thin wood surround) which was one of his most used items of test gear.

Sadly, as mentioned, it was rained on.

Most, if not all, of the controls are seized.

It's been in damp sheds for the past 30 years (when it wasn't out in the rain having been nicked).

I think the front panel was brass, around 1/8" or thicker. It weighed 117lb, but was very accurate and reliable.
At maximum output it could light a small torch bulb!
Make a good pantry transmitter in the butler's pantry of a mansion!

I inherited a Beomaster (4000 I think) a long time ago but somehow remember it with one prong holding the stylus. I must have remembered that wrong. Very space age. I was in my late teens and had little ability to repair it, and it did not survive.

I looked at B&K items, very nice designs also.

I've got a power amplifier that weighs in at 61kg/134lb.

As it hasn't been used for years, I suppose it could now be classed as an ornament!

I've turned down the last few really big Krell repairs simply due to them being too big and heavy to be practical. A KSA200 I worked on was only just possible for me to get on and off the workbench (which is of a height to be comfortable working standing up and a "bar stool" height chair is needed to work sitting down) on my own and that was about 8 years ago. It was "only" about 110lb IIRC but eg a sack of cement has no sharp corners and can be "pulled into the body" to make it more manageable in a way an amplifier can't...especially one with over a metre of spiky heatsinks along each side! Come to think of it the only enquiry I've ever had from this site was from someone else with a KSA200 and I turned that down.

So yes I'll work on the likes of KSA50's and 100's still but not the real monsters.

Sadly the bloke I sold it to turned out to be a scumbag who reported it as not working after 6 weeks. After going and froing, eBay eventually refunded him and, on collecting it back from him, I discovered he’d stolen some parts out of it. I replaced them but it seems to have some other new issues, so I childishly abandoned it in disgust.

Yikes, and I thought my Pioneer SPEC-4 (just 150W per channel and 24.5kg) was a serious lump of hardware. A deal I couldn't refuse appeared before me one day at Chester-le-Street flea market, SPEC-1 preamp, SPEC-4 and TX-9500 II tuner for £25 the lot. Found a taxi, accompanied them home and used them to delightful result for a few years until the SPEC-4's cutout started tripping, and they've been resting ever since with my trusty old Teac AS-100 back on amplifier duty. Doesn't seem terribly likely that I'll either service the SPEC-4 or get it transported to anyone more competent: I'm more likely sooner or later to have a go at bringing my scarce and rather becoming, to me if to no one else, Wharfedale WHF-20 back to life.

Yes, it's beautiful kit, a joy to see and use whether or not my ears would notice much difference from the pretty decent Teac. Then, my repair/restoration experience is very modest, some way in the past, and doesn't extend beyond valve gear and portable radios, and the SPEC-4 alone would be quite a lump to commit to a courier, so thus far it's remained on hold.
