Apologies if this is just too far off topic or just the wrong section for this:
The image below is from the back cover of a very recent 'PC Gamer' magazine. It seems the trend for repair / restoration programmes on TV has now spawned a PC 'SIM' (simulation / game) in which the aim of the game is to undertake to repair or restore things. I suppose we shouldn't judge it without seeing it, it may be that playing the game will teach you genuine skills and knowledge which can be applied in the real world but from the illustration in the ad it seems to have such wide scope that I'm not sure it would be possible for one game to include the necessary range and depth of knowledge in all of the areas it seems to cover. If it inspires just a few of the people who play it to go on to have a go at the real thing, would that be so bad? |

A free demo version is available on Steam - the game looks still to be a work in progress and is £15.99. Doesn't seem likely that any real world skills will be acquired - gameplay consists of accepting a repair order, taking the defective item from its box, ordering the parts you're told it needs, clicking until it's dismantled, clicking again until it's reassembled with the new parts installed, and receiving some cash back for recycling the broken parts you took out. There's a valve amplifier on a shelf in the introductory video: anyone's guess (until some intrepid soul plays far enough into the game) whether its needs will be something plausible or an Output Valve and a Transformer.
But, yes, there's no knowing whether it might influence an occasional player to endeavour to repair some actual objects, or even to try to make a living that way. Paul |

So few people think that items (other than cars) can be repaired that, even if it only raises awareness to that level, it will have done some good.
