Can anyone identify this piece of equipment, its seems to be a kind of chart recorder maybe from a telephone exchange? It's very heavy. Thanks in advance

Yes it is a chart recorder, not specifically for use in a telephone exchange, it could have found a use in a whole range of industries for recording things like furnace temperature, pressures in various parts of a chemical plant, voltages and currents in a transmitter, water levels in a pumping station or sewage works.... The list is endless.

it is a chart recorder but are there 10 electromagnets at fig5?
when they are operated do they make a mark on the paper from the typewriter ribon that I spot on the side view?
If so I have used a similar device to assess traffic in a strowger exchange.( many years ago).

I think the ten actuators move each of the ten pens +&- laterally on the moving paper. Think of the Polygraph in any number of 1950s psycological thrillers.

I have seen panel mounted chart recorders used in old industrial machinery (gas turbines) to record vibration levels, pressures, temperatures etc... If its industrial, and of the right age, the inputs may be 4 to 20 mA current loop which became an industrial analogue signal standard in the 1950s.

thanks for the replies, ill have to make an educated guess about the electromagnets when i see it, it uses a strange kind of plug so i cant really test it

here are some close ups of the chart paper and the plug, also the top clear cover can slide away so the operator can make write notes on the paper

Could your connectors be part of the "Multicon" or 159 series?

Found under the manufacturer names of: Jones, Painton and Plessey.

In 1969 Painton was acquired by Plessey Components. Not sure where Jones fits into the picture.
