Except the transmitter will have gone off air for ever before the next home test series...

Just to let you all know that the Premier TRF s working very well. It had probably been taken out of service still in running order. When I got the set it was stuffed full of probably carpet fluff. I blew this out with an airline and fitted a new mains lead. I also disconnected the frame aerial and installed an ordinary aerial terminal.( I plan to research frame aerials.)
So standing at a safe distance and wearing rubber gloves and safety goggles I switched it on and it worked fine. Good sensitivity and plenty of volume. There are only two medium wave stations audible now during the daytime in Liverpool so I'll be looking forward to checking the band again after darkness. The third knob made the sound a bit louder but doesn't seem to do much. Maybe the builder just deleted the wave change and added a reaction control instead. This is only the second TRF set that I have had, the first being a HAC single valve kit which had worked very well on the shortwave bands. What impressed me with the Premier was how sensitive it was and how good the audio was, clear and as loud as you wanted it. But I later realised what was really good, namely the complete lack of "squeals and whines", the unwanted products of superhets with their powerful on board oscillators. So now I'm a TRF fan! |

Ummm what sort of superhets have you been listening to? A properly aligned superhet will not whistle or whine....if it does, there is something else wrong!
