Exactly, that's right, something rubs on the tape. The problem was constant until I cleaned the video mechanisms, I don't know how but it eliminated the friction with the tape for a while. The problem reappeared of nowhere and now it's getting worse again. Following the complete path that the tape takes within the video, I cannot determine what is causing the friction with the tape. Yes, I am in Spain and it is very hot outside, but indoors we are all year round between 18ºC and 28ºC more or less, but it could be that the heat had something to do with the fault. I've been using the video 2000 for hours last weeks. Some parts are probably wearing excessively. This video was a jewel, it had never broken in almost 40 years, never. |

Re: Problems with Video 2000 philips VR2840
Hi,
If the tape path and lower head drum are totally clean, then the only other culprit I can think of is the pinch roller which is creasing the tape as it passes through. However, the pinch roller is on the exit side of the tape path, so if it were to blame, you would only see the scratch when you come to replay that damaged section, not as it is currently playing. Another cause of horizontal lines on these is through dead spots on the DTF brushes slip rings, which sit in the 'bridge' across the head drum. Tiny arcs will cause interference at the point at where the dead spot is in relation to the angle of the drum and hence horizontal position in the picture. |

It could be the pressure roller. Is it soft but firm, or is it more hard and like glass?

Sorry, I'm not a video expert. With my old Video 2000 philips VR2025 I bought new in 1982 (the one in the photo on my profile), until it broke down, the only maintenance I did was to clean it thoroughly when the image lost quality. Thank you guys very much for your help. Last edited by dagoban; 27th Aug 2021 at 1:24 am. |

Re: Problems with Video 2000 philips VR2840
Hi corkers
I think it's unlikely to be the pinch roller creasing the tape, as this would be seen as a vertically moving loss of rf. I do like your idea of "sparking" in the high voltage DT head brush /slip rings. After many hours of service it became a problem in broadcast VTR's from 1" 'C' through the various cassette formats. I would always replace the brush / slip assy during a head change service. Last edited by Amtec123; 5th Sep 2021 at 10:48 am. |

Re: Problems with Video 2000 philips VR2840
Finally the video has been repaired by a specialist using pieces from another identical video2000. I've hardly tried it but it seems to be doing better.
I think the mistake I made was using the video for many hours at a time, up to four hours at a time at least two or three times during my vacation period. Better one or two hours and stop. I leave you a photo of the 4-5 minute test. |

Glad your VR2840 is now working correctly.
Out of interest do you know exactly what parts were replaced? |

Re: Problems with Video 2000 philips VR2840
As I understood all the part and mechanisms associated with the box in which the tape is inserted. The parts were taken from another identical video2000 damaged for another reason. I have photos of when I started to repair it on my own but I gave up. I could more or less indicate in the photo what has been changed.
I recently repaired my 20 year old Samsung SV651X VHS video and I did something similar. I changed all the mechanical parts, leaving the electronics untouched, but it was simple because everything was modulated. In the case of the 2000 philips VR2840 video I didn't dare because it was all very miniaturized and it was too much work for my patience. With my other philips video 2000, the VR2025, is everything simpler because there is no miniaturization and it can be disassembled by blocks. |

Thanks for the update, since you could see tape damage it was always going to be a mechanical issue.
Good result. |

Re: Problems with Video 2000 philips VR2840
I just comment on a detail. This weekend I used the repaired philips vr2840 for about two hours and I was pleasantly surprised. Tapes that used to play in black and white or with a very poor image quality (nothing or almost nothing was visible) now look more than good in color, so I'm delighted. I thought it was a problem with those old tapes, but now I can confirm that the video was not in the best condition either.
I hope the repair will allow me to enjoy video 2000 for a much longer time. |
