Still looks like an elec cap to me. If it is a coil it's rather unusual in it's mounting. Would expect a squarish paxolin end and a couple of fixing screws for a coil fitting. If you check the wiring to the ht supply, I would suspect that this item connects to it with a resistor or choke across the 2 terminals of this device. It might be that the can is isolated and one of the 2 terminals is the earthy or negative end of it. Looks a bit too large for any other area in the circuit, unless I am wrong and it is a coil.

Hi Dave, you're right, it is a cap. I unsoldered one of the legs and measured 30 uF. It looks like there is a 2W resistor measuring 1844 ohms across it.

That suggests there are two capacitors in the can, possibly a reservoir and a smoother, with the can itself being the common negative terminal. Or is there a short across the tags?
