Default Handle hell - ITT Palomino

Before I have a complete mental breakdown can anyone help me get the handle back in the chassis please? I opened up the radio to give it a good clean and also removed the handle (bad move) as it was filthy.

I can't for the life of me figure out how to get this back together. So far I've spent five hours messing with this and can't work it out. It's krypton Factor like design has beaten everyone in this house I can see there are two hinge parts and they fit the nubs on the handle but actually working out how it fits in the chassis is a different story.

I'm assuming many other ITT portables from that era had the same handle design. According to radiomuseum the Palomino had the same chassis as the Golf Europa 108A.

One of those designs that's probably easy when you know how. I hope!

Can you assemble the handle and slide it into the slot, the rear cover holding them in place?

I've tried that but I just can't get it to fit at all. I'm completely baffled. So, so frustrating

It slides in from the rear not the front.
This photo may help.

Thank you very much! A picture tells a thousand words. I had it in that position previously but I think I was so angry by that point I wasn't in the right frame of mind

Scrubbed up nicely. It was filthy. Still a bit more cleaning to do. Will give it a test.

One small mystery is this blank hole. When I opened up the radio I found a loose socket attached to two wires which fits that hole. The socket has threads on the outside. So when poked through the hole it would have one of those round nuts to secure it from the outside of case. Hardly any threads poke through though Is it some kind of mod someone has done? I've had a search around the web and can't find anything. I think this radio can be used as an amplifier so maybe it's that?

Don't know what the socket might be, but that's a mighty fine looking radio. I've always like the ITT stuff from the mid 70's, it was clean and smart.

That does look like it’s been fitted by an owner, ITT would have made it a much neater job probably next to the headphone socket.

At post #8, yes we had an ITT agency in the 70’s and sold a lot of these types of radio, nice product.

Set a meter to beeper range and buzz it through to the battery terminals.
It is most likely a bodged external power connector.

Thanks. I'm not too sure how to do that. I'll get my multimeter out later. It has a volume symbol which I assume is the correct setting. So one prong in the socket and one on a battery terminal? I'm not that knowledgeable with electronics.

Yes it's a very impressive looking radio. A beast! The audio is wonderful as you'd expect.

I can definitely confirm that hole is not original.
I dont understand why an external supply socket would be required on a 9 volt radio when the radio works on mains and battery already.
If it was designed for 8 x 1.5v cells then that may be different if you wanted to plug it into a car battery, for instance whilst camping.

On your meter you will find a setting where it beeps when you touch the probes together.
My first guess was external power however I may be wrong if the set already has mains.
Off grid battery may be the answer.
The beeper range on your meter will be the quickest way to find out where the added wires go for sure.

Might be more useful as an alternative input to the 5 pin DIN socket for feeding an audio signal in to use the radio as an amp.

Thanks. Can anyone give me clear instructions on how to do this please? Where do I put each probe, one on a battery terminal and the other on the socket I mentioned? I don't know much about electronics. Ta.

The radio seems to be performing very well after cleaning up the contacts. If only it had a fine tune. It would come in very handy on shortwave. Medi 1 from Morocco was coming in well on 171 kHz.

It looks like we need a photo showing where the wires go.
One will almost certainly go to the battery negative.
